데본·콘웰 지역 누수 줄이기 위해 3월부터 6개월간 리크봇 6천개 시범적으로 제공

영국 엑서터에 본사를 두고 있는 사우스 웨스트 워터(South West Water)는 가정의 누수 문제를 해결하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 혁신적인 누수 감지장치인 ‘리크봇(LeakBot)’을 개발하여 출시했다.

사우스 웨스트 워터는 데본(Devon)과 콘웰(Cornwall) 지역의 누수를 줄이기 위해 3월부터 이 지역의 고객들에게 6천 개의 리크봇(LeakBot)을 제공하는 시범사업을 펼친다고 밝혔다. 시범사업은 6개월간 진행될 예정이며, 성공할 경우 더 광범위하게 확대할 계획이다.

리크봇(LeakBot)은 가정 옥내 배관의 누수을 식별하는 데 도움이 되는 스마트 장치이다. 리크봇 장치는 각 가정 내 수도꼭지 근처에 있는 수도관에 고정할 수 있으며 건물 내에 물의 지속적인 흐름이 있는지 감지하여 고객의 스마트폰에 즉각적으로 알려준다.

누수가 감지되고 고객이 이를 찾아 수정할 수 없는 경우 리크봇은 무료로 수리를 수행하기 위해 엔지니어를 파견할 수 있다.

사우스 웨스트 워터의 가뭄 및 복원 책임자인 데이비드 해리스(David Harris)는 “우리는 항상 보다 전통적인 방법과 함께 지역 전체의 누출을 줄이는 새롭고 혁신적인 방법을 모색하고 있다. 이제 누수의 약 30%가 일반적으로 고객 소유의 자산에서 발견되므로 고객의 도움이 절실히 필요하다. 리크봇(LeakBot)을 사용하면 고객이 누수를 감지하여 신속하게  수리할 있다. 리크봇이 어떤 영향을 미칠지 기대된다”고 말했다.

이 시험은 사우스 웨스트 워터가 이 지역의 누수를 줄이기 위한 작업의 일부이며 고객이 물을 더 효율적으로 사용할 수 있도록 지원하기 위한 새로운 캠페인의 일부이다.

사우스 웨스트 워터는 한 달에 약 2천 건에 달하는 그 어느 때보다 많은 누수를 찾아 수리하고 있으며, 위성을 사용하여 지하 2m까지 누수를 찾아내며, 다트무어(Dartmoo)와 엑스무어(Exmoor) 전역에서 접근하기 어려운 곳은 드론 및 탐지견을 사용하는 등 혁신적인 기술을 활용하고 있다.

리크봇(LeakBot) 개발사인 온도(Ondo)의 크레이그 포스터(Craig Foster) CEO는 “이전 리크봇 시험에서는 가정 내 누수를 60% 감소시키는 성과를 거두었다. 사우스 웨스트 워터의 출시를 통해 우리는 지역 전체의 가정 누수로 인한 불필요한 낭비를 방지하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라면서 “우리는 초기 6천 개의 누수감지 장치 배포 작업을 진행하고 결과를 확인하기를 기대하고 있다”고 말했다.

South West Water to roll-out 6,000 leak detection devices to help fix leaks

South West Water is rolling out innovative leak detection technology across the region in an effort to tackle customer leaks head-on. 

The water company will be sending out 6,000 LeakBots to customers in Devon and Cornwall next month as part of a trialled approach to reduce leaks. The trial will run for six months and, if successful, could be rolled out more widely. 

LeakBots are smart devices which help identify internal leaks within customers’ properties. The LeakBot device can be clipped onto a water pipe near the customer’s internal stop tap and detect if there is a constant flow of water within the property, providing an instant alert to the customer’s smartphone.

If a leak is detected and customers are unable to find and fix it, LeakBot can send out an engineer to undertake the repair, free of charge. 

David Harris, South West Water’s Drought and Resilience Director, said: “We’re always looking at new and innovative ways of reducing leakage across the region, alongside more traditional methods. With around 30% of leaks now typically found on customers’ own properties, we really need the help of our customers. LeakBot will enable customers to detect leaks so that they can be fixed quicky. We’re excited to see the impact LeakBot will have.” 

The trial is part of South West Water’s work to reduce leaks in the area and is part of a new campaign to support customers in becoming more water efficient. 

South West Water is finding and fixing more leaks than ever before - around 2,000 per month - and utilising innovative techniques including using satellites to find water leaks two metres underground, drone pilots to cover hard to reach places across Dartmoor and Exmoor, and detection dogs to find leaks in challenging terrain. 

Craig Foster, Chief Executive Officer at Ondo, the company behind LeakBot, said: “Previous trials of LeakBot have achieved a 60% reduction in water leaks within the home. A roll-out with South West Water will allow us to help prevent unnecessary wastage through domestic leaks across the region. We look forward to working on the deployment of the initial 6,000 devices and seeing the results.”
