물 및 위생 문제 직면한 에티오피아·소말리아·수단·우간다 지역사회에 솔루션 제공

‘아프리카의 뿔(Horn of Africa)’ 이라고 불리는 에티오피아·소말리아·에리트레아·지부티·수단·부룬디·케냐·르완다·탄자니아·우간다 등은 기후변화로 인해 더욱 악화된 극심한 기상 현상을 겪고 있다.

최근 극심한 홍수와 파괴적인 가뭄으로 2천만 명의 어린이를 포함해 약 3천700만 명의 사람들이 피해를 입었다. 자일럼(Xylem)과 유니세프(UNICEF)는 긴급한 물과 위생 요구를 충족하기 위해 에티오피아, 소말리아, 수단, 우간다의 심각한 피해를 입은 지역사회에 솔루션을 제공하기 위해 협력하고 있다.

극한 기후 현상은 모두를 위한 깨끗한 물과 위생을 보장하는 유엔(UN)의 지속가능한 개발 목표 6(SDG 6)을 달성하는 것을 방해한다. 유니세프의 지역 물, 위생 및 보건 증진(R-WASH ; Regional Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) 프로그램은 기후 영향으로 난민을 수용하고 있는 지역사회를 중심으로 취약한 지역사회의 유틸리티가 회복탄력성 있고 공평하며 지속 가능한 서비스를 제공할 수 있도록 지원하는 것을 목표로 한다.

빈센트 치루제(Vincent Chirouze) 자일럼 아프리카의 전무이사는 “자일럼 워터마크(Xylem Watermark)는 모두를 위한 물안보를 발전시키려는 약속을 공유하는 유니세프와 같은 파트너의 공동 행동에 의해 구동된다"며 "우리의 협력과 혁신이 오늘날 지역사회가 직면한 가장 시급한 물문제를 해결할 수 있도록 돕는다"고 말했다.

이 파트너십은 동아프리카 지역사회의 장기적인 물안보를 보장하기 위한 역량을 구축하는 것이 주요 목적이다. 기업 사회 책임 프로그램인 '자일럼 워터마크'를 통해 자일럼 직원들은 해당 지역의 유니세프 WASH 전문가와 기술적 전문 지식을 공유하고, 무수수량 방지 및 대수층 재충전과 같은 분야에서 기후 복원 접근법 및 기술에 중점을 둔 새로운 솔루션 및 혁신을 식별하기 위해 협력할 것이다. 현지 유틸리티 직원은 실습 및 숙련도 제고를 위한 교육을 받게 되며, 유니세프는 재정 및 거버넌스 분야에서 유틸리티를 지원할 예정이다.

키트 고욜(Kitka Goyol) 유니세프 WASH 및 기후 지역 고문은 "사하라 이남 아프리카 전역에서 2억5천만 명이 넘는 사람들이 여전히 안전한 식수에 접근하지 못하고 있다"며 "모든 어린이와 그들의 가족이 신뢰할 수 있고 감당할 수 있는 물과 위생 서비스에 접근할 수 있을 때 경제적 생계가 개선될 수 있으며 건강, 교육, 평등이 번영할 수 있다. 자일럼과의 파트너십은 도움이 필요한 지역사회에 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 목표를 제공하고 파트너를 모아 해결책을 만들 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 본보기"라고 전했다.

Xylem, UNICEF Deepen Partnership to Deliver Vital Water Solutions in Horn of Africa

Programs Address Urgent Water and Sanitation Challenges for Communities in Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda

The Horn of Africa is experiencing extreme weather conditions worsened by climate change, including most recently, heavy flooding and a devastating drought that impacted nearly 37 million people, including 20 million children.”1 To meet urgent water and sanitation needs, UNICEF and Xylem (NYSE: XYL) are partnering to deliver solutions to severely affected communities in Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.

Climate extremes threaten progress towards the UN’s SDG 6 – ensuring clean water and sanitation for all. UNICEF’s regional water, sanitation and hygiene (R-WASH) program aims to equip utilities in vulnerable communities to provide resilient, equitable and sustainable services, with an emphasis on communities hosting refugees and those displaced by climate impacts.

“Xylem Watermark is powered by the collective action of our customers, colleagues, and partners like UNICEF, who share a commitment to advancing water security for all,” Vincent Chirouze, Managing Director for Xylem Africa, said. “This evolution of our work together illustrates how collaboration and innovation can address the most pressing water challenges facing communities today.”

Capacity building to ensure long-term water security for communities in East Africa is a core focus of the partnership. Through Xylem Watermark, the Company’s corporate social responsibility program, Xylem colleagues will share technical expertise with UNICEF's WASH specialists in the region, collaborating to identify new solutions and innovations focused on climate-resilient approaches and technologies, in areas such as solarization of borehole pumping, non-revenue water prevention, and aquifer recharge. Local utility staff will receive hands-on training and up-skilling, and UNICEF will support utilities in the areas of finance and governance.

"Across Sub-Saharan Africa, over 250 million people still lack access to safe drinking water,” said Kitka Goyol, Regional Adviser, WASH and Climate, UNICEF. “Economic livelihoods can only improve – and health, education and equality thrive – if all children and their families have access to reliable, affordable water and sanitation services. Our partnership with Xylem is a great example of what can be achieved when we bring the right partners together to create solutions and deliver targeted interventions that directly impact communities in need.”

The Horn of Africa projects will leverage learnings from UNICEF and Xylem’s collaboration to advance water and sanitation access in India, which has reached over 3.3 million people with WASH services and education since 2021.
