연방정부는 현재 이전 노동당 정부의 원타기(Wonthaggi) 담수화 플랜트 건설 허가 및 추진을 강력하게 비판해옴과 동시에 댐과 담수화 플랜트 시설들과 관련한 추가적 자본지출을 줄이거나 미루려고 하고 있다.

The Victorian government’s new draft strategy document, Melbourne’s Water Future, foreshadows savings of up to A$7 billion (US$6.3 billion) for the state by 2050, but only if it makes greater use of its rainwater, stormwater and wastewater resources.

The current coalition government has been critical of the previous Labor administration’s decision to construct the Wonthaggi desalination plant, and is seeking to reduce or defer the need for further capital expenditure relating to dams and desalination plants.

Its emphasis on decentralised water reuse for non-potable purposes feeds off the Living Victoria Ministerial Advisory Council’s findings, which suggest that under a ‘business as usual’ scenario, the state would most likely have to commit to two further large-scale desalination plants by 2050, with a combined capacity of 411,000m³/d and involving total capex of A$6 billion (US$5.5 billion).
