셰브론(Chevron Corporation, 뉴욕증권거래소: CVX)은 오늘 자회사인 유노컬 미얀마 오프쇼어(Unocal Myanmar Offshore Co., Ltd.)가 미얀마 연안에 위치한 라킨 분지 내의 한 광구에 대한 탐사 권한을 획득했다고 발표했다.

2,600만 에이커(10,600 평방 킬로미터)가 넘는 A5 광구는 양곤으로부터 북서 방향으로 약 125 마일(200 km) 지점에 위치하고 있다. 유노컬 미얀마 오프쇼어는 99%의 지분으로 이 광구에 대한 운영권을 갖게 된다. 미얀마 회사인 로열 마린 엔지니어링(RME) 측에서 이 광구의 나머지 1%에 대한 지분을 갖게 된다.

셰브론의 부회장이며 경영 부사장인 조지 커클랜드(George Kirkland)는 “이번 탐사 권한 획득은 아시아에서의 셰브론의 선도적 위치를 확대시키고, 탐사 기회에 대한 회사의 포트폴리오를 보완해 줄 것이다. 이 광구에 대한 탐사는 성장하고 있는 지역에 대한 에너지 공급 기회를 모색하기 위한 셰브론의 장기적 전략에 따른 것이다”고 밝혔다.

셰브론 아시아 퍼시픽(Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production Company)의 사장인 멜로디 마이어(Melody Meyer)는 “이번 입찰로 이 전략적 지역에 대한 평가를 수행할 기회를 얻게 되어 기쁘다. 우리는 미얀마에서 20년의 역사를 가지고 있으며, 이 유망 광구의 탐사를 통해 미얀마의 에너지 부문에 대한 지속적인 개발을 지원할 수 있기를 기대하고 있다”고 말했다.

셰브론의 자회사들은 안다만 해의 M5 및 M6 광구 내 야다나 및 세인 가스전에서의 천연 가스 생산을 위한 생산물 분배 계약에서 28.3 퍼센트의 비운영 사업 지분을 보유하고 있다. 셰브론은 또한 태국의 발전소에 공급할 천연 가스를 야다나에서 미얀마-태국 국경까지 운송하는 파이프라인 회사의 비운영 지분 28.3 퍼센트도 보유하고 있다.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) today announced its Myanmar subsidiary, Unocal Myanmar Offshore Co., Ltd., has been granted exploration rights in a block located offshore Myanmar, in the Rakhine basin.

Block A5, which spans more than 2.6 million acres (10,600 sq. km), is located approximately 125 miles (200 km) northwest of Yangon. Unocal Myanmar Offshore Co., Ltd. will be the operator of the block with a 99 percent interest. Royal Marine Engineering (RME), a Myanmar-based company, will hold the remaining interest in the block.

“This award expands Chevron’s leading position in Asia and complements the company’s portfolio of exploration opportunities,” said George Kirkland, vice chairman and executive vice president, Chevron Corporation. “The exploration of this block is aligned with Chevron’s long-term strategy to seek opportunities to provide energy to a growing region.”

Chevron subsidiaries hold a 28.3 percent non-operated working interest in a production sharing contract for the production of natural gas from the Yadana and Sein fields within Block M5 and M6 in the Andaman Sea. The company also has a 28.3 percent non-operated interest in a pipeline company that transports the natural gas from Yadana to the Myanmar-Thailand border for delivery to power plants in Thailand.
