Baltimore to implement new acoustic pipe condition assessment technology

Baltimore City Department of Public Works ("the City") will soon implement a new pipe condition assessment service as a means to assess the condition of select water distribution and transmission mains throughout the city.

Called ePULSE¢â, provided by Echologics -- an affiliate of Mueller Co., and a developer and provider of acoustic-based technologies for water loss management, leak detection and pipe condition assessment -- the technology is a non-invasive pipe assessment service that provides municipalities with an accurate measurement of the remaining average wall thickness of selected pipe segments, and identifies leaks at the same time.

Accordingly, municipalities may use the information provided by ePULSE to efficiently and cost-effectively mitigate risks associated with deteriorating pipe walls, reduce non-revenue water, and prioritize repairs and replacement.

The project includes testing more than 30 sections of water mains, some up to two miles in length and ranging from 6 to 60 inches in diameter. It is part of the City's Project 1108, Water Audit and Condition Assessment for Water Infrastructure. Project 1108 authorizes a water audit, condition assessment of water mains, leak detection and repairs, and other services to improve the prioritization and selection of pipe segments targeted for rehabilitation.
