Suez signs $40.8M contract with Brazil pulp and paper producer

Degremont, a subsidiary of SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, has been awarded a ¢æ30-million ($40.8-million) contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of two water treatment facilities for Klabin, the largest paper producer, exporter and recycler in Brazil, with strong involvement in the pulp and paper industry.

Klabin is building a 2-billion ($2.72-billion) Greenfield Kraft pulp mill in Ortigueira (Parana State), located south of Brazil, known as the Puma Project. Production of the new plant is forecasted to start the first quarter of 2016.

The mill will have an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tons, of which 1.1 million tons will include short fiber and 400,000 tons will consist of long fiber -- partly to be converted into fluff pulp.

The main challenges for the pulp and paper industry rely in guaranteeing water needs to ensure the continuity of production and adapting operations according to market fluctuation while still ensuring reliability and high-level quality services for water treatment.

As such, in order to meet these high quality and quantity water needs, Degremont will also provide a process water plant, equipped with the Densadeg¢ç technology followed by Aquazur¢ç filters, as well as a boiler feedwater plant equipped with Ion Exchange Process.
With an hourly capacity of 5,900 m3 for the process water plant and 600 m3 for the boiler feed, the new facilities are planned to begin operations in October 2015.
