재활용 및 재사용이 가능하며 모든 박스의 방수코팅용으로 사용 가능한 새로운 재료가 오스트레일리아 퀸즐랜드공과대학(Queensland University of Technology) 연구팀에 의해 개발되었다.
Albert Tietz 및 부교수인 Les Edye가 개발한 리그닌(lignin) 기반의 코팅은 현재 노스퀸즐랜드에서 과일박스에 시험적으로 사용되고 있다. 만약 이 시도가 성공한다면 2015년 중반쯤에 시장에 상품으로 판매가 가능할 것으로 기대되고 있다.
Edye 교수에 따르면, 리그닌은 풀과 펄프화된 목재로부터 자연적으로 얻어되는 부산물이라고 한다. 연구팀은 리그닌의 방수코팅 잠재력을 발견했으며, 제당업체에서 사탕수수에서 설탕을 추출하고 남은 찌꺼기인 bagasse의 부가가치를 높이는 방안도 연구하고 있다.
좀 더 조사와 연구를 거쳐 이제는 상업적으로 재배하고 가공한 풀로부터 추출한 리그닌을 이용하고 있다. 가장 흥미로운 것은 이번에 개발한 리그닌 코팅이 지속가능하다는 점이다. 전통적인 왁스 코팅은 석유화학물질로부터 만들어지는데, 일단 종이나 판지에 사용하고 나면 그 종이나 판지는 더 이상 재활용이 불가능해진다. 개발된 리그닌 코팅은 가격 경쟁력이 있으며, 100% 재활용이 가능하다. 또한 왁스보다 박스의 강도와 방수성능을 크게 높여준다.
약 40만 톤의 왁스로 코팅된 판지가 매년 호주에서 재활용되지 못하고 매립되고 있다. 퀸즐랜드대학의 혁신관련 Qutbluebox는, 2년 동안 연구팀과 긴밀히 협조하였으며 산업에 적용할 수 있는 코팅의 연구개발을 위해 25만 달러의 자금을 지원하였다. Qutbluebox의 CEO인 Michael Finney는, 코팅의 배합을 최적화하고 산업규모의 실험을 지원하기 위해 Black Sheep Capital로부터 20만 달러를 추가로 확보하였다고 밝혔다.
식품포장 및 건축산업에서 사용되는 미리 제작된 벌집모양의 벽체(honeycomb wall)에 리그닌 기반의 코팅을 성공적으로 사용한 바 있다고 Finney는 밝혔다. 호주 및 대규모 다국적 회사들이 이 코팅의 개발에 관심을 표명하여 왔다. 호주에 기반을 둔 Black Sheep Capital은 다양한 포트폴리오를 가진 사모 투자회사(private equity firm)이다.
Black Sheep Capital의 Daniel Gavel은 퀸즐랜드대학이 개발한 방수코팅이 큰 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 평가하였다. 이 방수코팅 기술은 종이 및 판지에서부터 건축자재에 이르기까지 다양한 분야에 사용될 수 있으며, 현재의 재활용이 불가능한 석유화학제품 기반의 코팅을 대체하게 될 것으로 기대한다고 밝혔다. 또한 Qutbluebox가 제공하는 전략적 방향과 전문지식을 연구팀의 독창성과 열정을 결합하여, 시장에 고부가가치의 솔루션(solution)을 제공하는 제품을 선도하게 될 것이라고 강조하였다.

Albert Tietz and Adjunct Associate Professor Les Edye's lignin-based coating is currently being trialled on fruit boxes in North Queensland's banana belt.
If successful, they anticipate the product will be on the market in mid-2015.
Professor Edye said lignin is a naturally occurring by-product from pulped wood and grasses.
"We discovered the potential of lignin as a
waterproof coating while researching ways to add value to bagasse in the sugar industry," Professor Edye said.
"After some investigation and research, we're now using lignin extracted from a commercially-grown and processed grass.
"What's most exciting is that our lignin barrier coating is sustainable - traditional wax coatings are made from petrochemicals and, once it's on the paper or cardboard, that paper or cardboard can no longer be recycled.
"We've proven that our lignin coating is cost-comparable, is 100% recyclable, provides a high level of waterproofing and strengthens the boxes to a higher degree than wax - not bad for a product made from a renewable resource."
Professor Edye said around four hundred thousand tonnes of wax-coated cardboard is added to landfill in Australia every year because it cannot be recycled.
QUT's innovation arm,
qutbluebox, has been working closely with the researchers for two years, providing more than $250,000 in proof-of-concept funding to develop and scale the coating for industry.
qutbluebox CEO Michael Finney said his organisation had secured a further $200,000 from Black Sheep Capital to optimise the coating's formula and fund industrial-scale trials.
"We've already successfully coated the lignin-based formulation on food packaging and pre-fabricated honeycomb walls used in the construction industry. We're now trialling it on fruit boxes for the banana industry," Mr Finney said.
"Both Australian and large-scale multinationals have expressed an interest in the coating's development..
"Critically, the Black Sheep investment will help us fast-track the waterproof coating's industrial-scale trialling."
Australian-based Black Sheep Capital is a private equity firm with a diverse portfolio of holdings.
Black Sheep Capital Director Daniel Gavel said the QUT waterproof
coating solution had great potential.
"The solution can be applied across several marketing sectors, from paper and cardboard to building materials and has the potential to displace existing non-recyclable and petrochemical based coatings," said Mr Gavel.
"We're also confident that the combination of strategic direction and expertise provided by qutbluebox, coupled with an innovative and enthusiastic research team, will lead to a product that will deliver a high value solution to the marketplace."
