Idle energy load costs $19B a year

As homes become smarter, it's important to look at the energy use in smart appliances. A new report studied the energy used by inactive appliances, electronics, and other electrical devices used in the home, and found that those devices use up to $19 billion a year in the United States. That equals around $165 per household.

The report was conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Home Energy Analytics, and the Stanford Sustainable Systems Lab. They studied three sets of data: smart meter data from 70,000 northern California homes; smart meter and additional information for 2,750 San Francisco Bay Area homes; and an in-home audit of 10 Bay area homes. The average home in the study had 65 connected devices.

"If all homes in the United States reduced their always-on load for inactive devices to the level of the 25 percent most efficient household in our survey, it could save consumers $8 billion on their annual utility bills and prevent 44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution," said the NRDC in a statement.

Many inactive devices allow being placed in standby or sleep mode -- where they are left fully on, but not used. The report found that inactive devices use around 23 percent of household electricity in Northern California -- or 1,300 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually per home.

"There has been a veritable explosion in the number of electronics, appliances, and other miscellaneous devices plugged into, or permanently connected to, America's homes," NRDC said. "Most are consuming electricity around-the-clock, even when the owners are not using them or think they have been turned off."

Some of the notable always-on devices include heated towel racks, whole-house audio systems, and security or surveillance systems. Others include microwaves, printers, coffee makers, TVs, pool controllers, low-voltage lighting, water heaters, computer systems, treadmills, and refrigerators.

The report found that if customers turned off their devices when not in use, they can:

• Save $8 billion on their annual utility bills,
• Avoid 64 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity use per year,
• Prevent 44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution, or 4.6 percent of U.S. residential sector carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from electricity generation.

"A great deal of idle electricity can be saved through no-cost or low-cost actions by motivated consumers once they are informed about how energy and money are being needlessly wasted," NRDC said. "However, few will act unless they are alerted to energy waste and the steps to eliminate it."

NRDC also said that manufacturers can take control through design by removing inactive settings or adding energy efficiency settings. However, the report said that customers, manufacturers, utilities, and government all have responsibility in reducing idle energy load.
