미국 환경보호청(EPA)은 이리호(Lake Erie)의 유해 조류독소를 방지하기 위한 감축 목표 제안(안)에 대해 대중의 자문을 구했다. 이는 5대호 수질 협약(Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement)에 의한 것으로 미국과 캐나다의 호수에서 검출된 인의 과다한 농도를 2016년 초까지 감소시키기 위함이다.

EPA의 Region-5 관리자이자 5대호 국립 프로그램의 책임자인 Susan Hedman“미국과 캐나다는 유해 조류독소로부터 이리호를 보호하기 위한 인 농도 감소에 최선을 다하고 있다”며 “인을 감소시키는 것은 도시계획과정의 일부로 양국은 2016년 초까지의 기한을 충족하면서 최종적으로 인을 감소할 계획이다”라고 밝혔다.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that it is seeking public input on proposed phosphorus reduction targets to combat harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement requires the United States and Canada to adopt targets in an effort to reduce excess phosphorus levels for the lake by early 2016.

"The United States and Canada are committed to cutting phosphorus levels to protect Lake Erie from harmful algal blooms," said EPA Region-5 Administrator/Great Lakes National Program Manager Susan Hedman. "Public input is an important part of the process as both countries work to meet the 2016 deadline to adopt final phosphorus reduction targets."

- The phosphorus reduction recommendations developed by the workgroup were presented during the semiannual Great Lakes Executive Committee meeting in Chicago at the end of June. The recommendations call for a 40-percent reduction in:

- Total phosphorus entering the Western Basin and Central Basin of Lake Erie from the U.S. and Canada
Spring total and soluble reactive phosphorus loads from the Maumee River

- Spring total and soluble reactive phosphorus loads from various watersheds where localized algae is a proble
