American Water to play active role in NARUC Summer Committee Meetings

American Water (AW), the nation's largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, recently announced that it will play an active role in the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners' (NARUC) Summer Committee Meetings, taking place on July 12-15, at the New York Marriott Marquis, in New York City, N.Y.

The meetings will bring together utility regulators from every state in the U.S., along with federal and international officials, to learn about the latest in regulatory trends and sharing best practices. NARUC meetings are key to staying current and engaged in the essential utility sectors, especially the water and watewater industry. AW will have a strong presence at the conference with several expert presenters:

- On July 12, Senior Operations Director Kevin Kirwan will participate in a panel titled "Perspectives on Catastrophic Events". The session will focus on lessons learned, best practices and industry transformations following catastrophic events, such as Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy.

- On July 14, William Varley, Northeast Division Senior Vice President, will participate in a panel on energy efficiency and the EPA's "Clean Power Plan." He will discuss the geothermal pilot project undertaken by AW's New York subsidiary and provide thoughts on other energy-efficiency and carbon reduction opportunities in water system operations.

- Also that day, Jim Jenkins, vice president of Rates & Regulatory Policy, will participate in a panel regarding "The Ratemaking Toolbox". The session will focus on the regulatory tools available for tackling water quality, water scarcity, wastewater reuse, infrastructure replacement, and other matters important to providing quality water service.

- On July 15, Rich Svindland, vice president of Operations, will participate in a panel titled, "Impact of Telecom Technology and Policy on the Energy and Water Sectors." The panel will focus on how telecom is used in the energy and water sectors to collect information, aid communication, and identify operational issues and needed repairs.
