CH2M to develop 'master plan' for Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) of Southern India has selected CH2M, a global engineering company, to develop a visionary strategic master plan that will help the Indian city of Bengaluru meet its water and wastewater infrastructure needs through 2050.

The master plan -- "Preparation of Vision and Strategic Master Plan for Water Supply, Sewerage System & Asset Management" -- will provide recommendations on how BWSSB should operate in coming years, from managing water resources to planning water infrastructure projects and optimally obtaining long-term environmental, social and economic outcomes, which will ensure that Bengaluru continues to grow and prosper.

Like many of the world's global cities, Bengaluru has significantly grown in the past two decades, with a present population of nearly 10 million and a projected population of more than 25 million by the year 2050. The burgeoning population has created severe stress on water supply, sanitation services and associated infrastructure.

"The latest undertaking by BWSSB is a visionary and proactive approach for the city to develop an integrated and forward looking master plan, which is futuristic and includes resiliency to withstand future water challenges posed by Bengaluru's continued growth," said Greg McIntyre, CH2M Global Water Business Group president. "We are looking forward to ... helping our client develop a holistic plan that balances the city's water and wastewater service and infrastructure needs with its forecasted growth, as well as prepare a water infrastructure strategy and master plan, which can be used as a model for other Indian cities in the future."

When finalized, the master plan is envisaged to promote optimal, effective and integrated use of water resources, promote best practices in water and wastewater infrastructure services and asset management and identify potential alternative sources of water, along with a road map to involve the community in preserving and promoting the city's water resources.
