천연자원의 사용을 감소시키고 제품이나 프로세스(process)의 생명주기 전역에 해로운 물체의 양을 저하시키는 것은 혁신을 위해 반드시 수행되어야 하는 선행조건이다. 하지만, 작은 소기업들은 아직 이를 발생시키기 위해 노력하고 있다. 그리고 그들은 이를 위해 녹색에너지화로의 전환을 꾀하고 있으며 이를 통해 경제적 수익과 함께 환경오염을 감소시키고자 한다.

녹색에너지로 전환하는 것은 최근 산업에서 떠오르고 있는 가장 큰 트렌드(trend)이다. 하지만, 소규모 기업들은 환경친화적으로 되는 가장 좋은 방법이 녹색에너지인가 하는 의구심을 가지곤 한다. 이러한 기업들에게 솔루션(solution)을 제공하는 것은 LiMaS 연구프로젝트의 본질적인 목표였다.

 

 

이 프로젝트는 2011년 완료되었다. LiMaS 연구프로젝트는 중소기업에 친환경 혁신 솔루션을 제공하기 위해 시작된 최초의 검사설비를 이들 기업에 공급하고자 하였다. 이번 프로젝트는 제조기간 동안 에너지 소비수준이 어느 정도인지를 측정하고 이에 맞는 분석하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 웹 기반의 솔루션 개발을 추진하였다.

 

이러한 적용은 보일러(boiler), 산업용 용광로, 그리고 변압기와 같은 제품을 사용하여 에너지를 제조하는 기업들에게 적합한 것이다. 뿐만 아니라, 그러한 제조용 전기 및 전자 설비에도 사용이 된다.

예를 들어, 스페인 전기 및 전자설비 기업인 Proton Electronica社(트라파가란(Trapagaran) 소재)는 LiMaS 연구프로젝트에 의해 개발된 프로그램(program)을 실행하여왔다. 특히, 제품의 출시부터 제품수명주기 끝에 있는 제품에 어떠한 환경적 영향을 미치는지 간략하게 평가 - 이러한 평가는 제품수명주기평가로 알려져 있음 - 할 수 있는 어플리케이션(application)에 관심을 가지고 있다.

 

이러한 웹기반 툴(tool)의 장점은 이것이 최초 질문지를 통해 단 한 번 만에 데이터(data) 유입을 요구한다는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라, 제품수명주기평가와 함께 폭넓게 다양한 토픽(topic)들을 커버(cover)하고 있다. 이것들은 제품탄소발자국을 계산하는 방법, 친환경 설계와 친환경 라벨(label)을 부착할 수 있는 가능성을 개선시키는 방법, 그리고 법률적 필요사항, 위험한 존재(물체)의 모니터링 및 환경적 측면의 관리 우선권 등을 분석하는 방법 등을 포함하고 있다.

이 프로그램은 어떤 제품의 환경적 개선을 좀 더 편리하고 빠르게 측정할 수 있게 해줄 것이며, 이를 경쟁제품과 비교할 것이라고 Proton Electronica社 Angel Vidal 최고경영자는 말하였다. Proton Electronica社는 공공 장소에서 사용되고 있는 가스를 대체하기 위해 LED 전등의 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다.

 

좀 더 구체적으로 Vidal 회장은 “우리가 재설계를 경험하였던 매 시간마다 이산화탄소, 물, 독성물질, 그리고 우리가 제품생명주기를 통해 절약할 수 있는 에너지의 양이라는 측면에서의 개선을 측정하기 위해 이 프로그램을 사용하여왔다. 뿐만 아니라, 우리가 가스등 사용과 비교하여 피할 수 있는 중금속의 양이 어느 정도인지를 측정하기 위해서도 이 프로그램을 사용하였다”고 말했다.

중소기업과 함께한 이전 경험은 프로젝트 파트너(project partner)들에게 다음과 같은 교훈을 주었다: 친환경-혁신을 실행하는 것은 매우 유익할 수 있다. 왜냐하면, 그것들의 주요 영향이 사용 단계 동안 발생하는 에너지 소비량과 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있기 때문이다.

 

타라고나(Tarragona) 소재 SIMPPLE社의 친환경-혁신 프로젝트 매니저인 Juna Carlos Alonso 코디네이터(co-ordinator)는 중소기업의 최초 요구와 기존의 전문 친환경-혁신 툴의 복잡성 간에는 큰 차이가 존재하였음을 지적하였다. 즉, 중소기업 요구와 기존 툴 간 연결이 조금은 어렵다는 점을 지적하였다.

따라서 이러한 계획은 친환경-혁신 시장에 존재하는 갭(gap)을 메우게 될 것이다. 비록 친환경-혁신 시장에서 사용되기 편리한 툴(예> 친환경-디자인 지시 툴)들이 존재한다 하더라도 적절한 정보가 한 곳에서 수집되지는 않는다. 게다가 대부분의 툴은 규제 준수에 관련된 정보를 가지고 있지 않다.

이에 대해 영국 체스터(Chester)에 위치한 지속가능한 설계 및 혁신 컨설턴트 기업인 C-Tech Innovation社의 지속가능한 혁신 전문가인 Ben Peace는 “이러한 패키지(package)가 가지고 있는 더 큰 장점은 이것이 비전문가들을 위한 좋은 소개와 원스톱 숍(one stop shop)이 가능하다라는 점이다. 이를 통해 비전문가들은 그들의 제품이 규제를 따르고 있으며, 친환경-혁신적 리더가 되는데 도움을 줄 수 있음을 처음으로 인지하고 있다”고 말했다.

다른 툴에 따르면, 가능한 한계점들이 소프트웨어(software)의 세부성보다 컴퓨터 모델(computer model)의 특성과 더 많은 관련성을 가지고 있다고 한다. 프랑스(France) 베르사유 대학교(University of Versailles) 친환경-혁신 경영학과에서 석사학위 담당자로 있는 Ioan Ciumasu는 “현실적으로 에너지 플럭스(energy flux)처럼 수학적으로 예측할 수 없는 프로세스들이 존재한다.

 

게다가 이러한 예측 모델들은 기준치와 그들이 작업을 멈추어야 하는 기준치 이후를 분석하고 있다”고 말했다. 뿐만 아니라, 그는 이러한 툴의 가치가 그들이 수행하였던 가정의 가치만큼 좋으며, 좋은 데이터를 필요로 한다고 덧붙였다. 이는 국가 간 다양성과 오염을 측정하기 위한 방법이 존재하는 툴이다.

Reducing the use of natural resources and lowering the amount of harmful substances across the life-cycle of a product or process has become a must for innovation. But smaller companies have yet to make it happen.

 

Going green is one of the fastest growing trends, particularly in industry. But smaller size companies are often left wondering how best to become more environmentally friendly. Providing solutions to these companies was precisely the goal of the LiMaS research project, completed in 2011.

 

It aimed at supplying small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with a first screening instrument to start integrating eco-innovation into their business. This project led to the development of web-based solution featuring energy level consumption during manufacturing.

 

This application is specifically geared towards companies manufacturing energy using products, such as boilers, industrial furnaces and transformers as well asthose manufacturing electrical and electronic equipment.

 

For example, Spanish electrical and electronic equipment company Proton Electronica based in Trapagaran, has implemented the program developed by the project. It is particularly interested in the application performing a simplified assessment of the environmental impact of the product from its creation to its end-of-life, also known as life cycle assessment (LCA).

 

The advantage of this web-based tool is that it requires input of data only once through an initial questionnaire. It also covers a broad variety of topics in addition, to LCA. These include details of how to calculate a product carbon footprint, how to improve its eco-design and the possibility to gain eco-labels, as well as legislative requirements, hazardous substances monitoring and prioritisation of environmental aspects for management.

 

The programme makes it "easy and quick to calculate the environmental improvements of a certain product and compare it with competitors," Angel Vidal, CEO of the Proton Electronica, tells youris.com.

 

The company is now working on the development of LED lights to substitute the gas ones used in public spaces. "Each time we have undergone a redesign we have used the program to verify the improvements in terms of how much CO2, water, toxic substances and energy we would save through the product's life-cycle and how many heavy metals we would avoid compared to the gas lights," explains Vidal.

 

Previous experience working with SMEs taught project partners that [implementing eco-innovation can be the beneficial because their] main impact is related to energy consumption during the usage phase," explains project co-ordinator Juan Carlos Alonso, eco-innovation project manager at consultancy SIMPPLE, based in Tarragona, Spain. He also remarks that he previously noticed there was a big gap between the first needs of a SME and the complexity or the too specific focus of existing professional eco-innovation tools.

 

This initiative therefore fills a gap in the eco-innovation market. Although there are tools that are easy to use in the market, such as eco-design indicator tool, the relevant information is not gathered in one place.

 

What is more, most tools do not have information related regulatory compliance. "What is great about the package is that it's a one stop shop and a good introduction for the non-experts to first ensure their products are compliant and then go beyond that to [become] eco-innovative leaders," says Ben Peace, sustainable innovation specialist at sustainable design and innovation consultancy C-Tech Innovation, located in Chester, UK.

 

According to others, possible limitations relate more to the nature of computer models than to the details of the software. "In nature there are processes that cannot be anticipated mathematically, such as energy fluxes," says Ioan Ciumasu, director of the master degree in management of eco-innovation at the University of Versailles, France, adding: "moreover these predictive models work between thresholds and after that threshold they stop working."

 

He also notes that the value of these tools is as good as the value of the assumptions they have taken and that they require good data, where methods to measure pollution and vary between countries.

 

Experts agree on the need for wider dissemination in Europe of the benefits of eco-innovation not only from an environmental but also from an economic and competitiveness perspective as higher initial investment but energy saving in the long run.

 

This is an issue specifically critical for many SMEs deeply affected by the crisis. Ciumasu concludes: "I think that many enterprises do see the advantages of eco-innovation but need to find out how to assimilate it in their products, and this takes time."
