미국 텍사스 A&M 대학교와 NASA의 연구진이 수행한 연구에 따르면 아시아 지역에서의 극심한 대기 오염이 세계 전역의 기상과 기후 패턴에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 과학저널 Nature Communications의 최신호를 통해 발표되었다.

연구진은 최근 30년간의 에어로졸과 기상에 대한 데이터 수집 및 기후 모델을 사용하여 거의 대부분이 중국에서 기인하는 아시아 지역의 대기 오염이 전세계 대기 순환에 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다.

 

연구진은 본 연구에서 사용한 모델이 아시아에서 기인한 오염물질이 대기 상층부에 영향을 미치는 것을 확실하게 보여주었으며, 이것이 폭풍우나 사이클론을 보다 강력하게 만드는 것으로 보인다고 설명하였다.

대기오염은 구름생성, 강수, 폭풍우의 강도 및 다른 인자들에 영향을 미쳐 결국에는 기후에까지 영향을 미친다. 아시아 지역에서 발생한 대기오염은 북미지역의 기상 패턴에 큰 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다.

중국의 지난 30년간 경제성장은 수많은 제조공장, 산업시설, 발전소 및 다양한 시설들을 건설하는 원인이 되어, 이로부터 엄청난 양의 대기오염 물질들이 배출되었다. 본 연구는 입자상 오염물질들이 일단 대기 중으로 배출되면 전세계의 구름 형성과 기상 시스템에 영향을 미친다는 결과를 보여 주었다.

석탄 연소의 증가와 자동차 배기가스는 중국을 포함한 아시아 국가들에서 가장 주요한 오염물질 배출원이다. 베이징과 같은 중국 내 도시에서의 대기 중 오염물질 수치는 세계보건기구에서 설정한 허용 수치의 100배를 넘는 경우가 많다. 본 연구는 나날이 증가하고 있는 오염물질 문제로 인해 일부 지역에서는 폐암의 발병률이 400퍼센트 증가하였음을 확인하였다.

이렇게 심각한 오염 상태는 정체되어 있는 기상 패턴과 많은 아시아 국가들에서의 석탄연소 증가가 함께 작용하는 겨울철에 더욱 심각해지는 경향이 있다.

 

이 복합작용은 수 주 동안 지속되는 대기오염과 스모그를 형성한다. 중국정부는 오염물질 기준을 강화하고 오염문제의 해결을 위해 재정을 아끼지 않을 것임을 약속하였다. 본 연구에서 사용한 모델과 데이터는 본 연구에서 도달한 결과와 매우 일치하였다.

아시아 지역에서 발생한 엄청난 양의 에어로졸은 대기 중에서 6마일 이상 상승할 수 있으며, 이것은 구름 형성과 기후에 명백한 영향을 끼친다.

 

연구진은 이러한 에어로졸들이 정확히 어떻게 전세계로 이동하며 기후에 영향을 미치는가를 추가적으로 연구할 필요가 있다고 덧붙였다. 전체적인 프로세스가 어떻게 작용하는 것을 확인하기 위해서는 많은 다양한 대기 관측 결과와 기후 모델들을 살펴볼 필요가 있다.

Extreme air pollution in Asia is affecting the world's weather and climate patterns, according to a study by Texas A&M University and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory researchers.

 

Yuan Wang, a former doctoral student at Texas A&M, along with Texas A&M atmospheric sciences professors Renyi Zhang and R. Saravanan, have had their findings published in the current issue of Nature Communications.

 

Using climate models and data collected about aerosols and meteorology over the past 30 years, the researchers found that air pollution over Asia -- much of it coming from China -- is impacting global air circulations.

 

"The models clearly show that pollution originating from Asia has an impact on the upper atmosphere and it appears to make such storms or cyclones even stronger," Zhang explains.

 

"This pollution affects cloud formations, precipitation, storm intensity and other factors and eventually impacts climate. Most likely, pollution from Asia can have important consequences on the weather pattern here over North America."

 

China's booming economy during the last 30 years has led to the building of enormous manufacturing factories, industrial plants, power plants and other facilities that produce huge amounts of air pollutants.

 

Once emitted into the atmosphere, pollutant particles affect cloud formations and weather systems worldwide, the study shows.

 

Increases in coal burning and car emissions are major sources of pollution in China and other Asian countries.

 

Air pollution levels in some Chinese cities, such as Beijing, are often more than 100 times higher than acceptable limits set by the World Health Organization standards, Zhang says.

 

One study has shown that lung cancer rates have increased 400 percent in some areas due to the ever-growing pollution problem.

 

Conditions tend to worsen during winter months when a combination of stagnant weather patterns mixed with increased coal burning in many Asian cities can create pollution and smog that can last for weeks.

 

The Chinese government has pledged to toughen pollution standards and to commit sufficient financial resources to attack the problem. "The models we have used and our data are very consistent with the results we have reached," Saravanan says.

 

"Huge amounts of aerosols from Asia go as high as six miles up in the atmosphere and these have an unmistakable impact on cloud formations and weather."

 

Zhang adds that "we need to do some future research on exactly how these aerosols are transported globally and impact climate. There are many other atmospheric observations and models we need to look at to see how this entire process works."

 

Yuan Wang, who conducted the research with Zhang while at Texas A&M, currently works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a Caltech Postdoctoral Scholar.
