The Scientists and Engineers Without Borders(hereinafter the ¡®SEWB¡¯) was established in 2009 to look for the good way to serve science and technology for the least developed countries and developing countries. Since then a dedicated and broadening interdisciplinary research of SEWB together with many related institutes and universities such as Seoul National University has brought exemplars on Appropriate Technology development. The SEWB currently comprises academics and professionals across our country, who are united in their commitment to enhance, broaden and connect appropriate technology education, research and practice with the undergirding philosophy of empowering local communities in enhancing and controlling technologies to improve their quality of life.
The Innovative Water Center(hereinafter the ¡®iWc¡¯) was established in 2013 to promote the water and sanitation levels in Cambodia with educating and training professionals under the MOU engaged between NPIC and SEWB (Scientists and Engineers Without Borders) supported by the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and National Research Foundation. The iWc has conducted some research projects looking for innovative and sustainable solutions for water problems through evaluation of existing and demonstrative systems with education of trainees in NPIC. The results obtained from the center will be shared with neighboring countries and some of them certainly provide business opportunities.
RATIONALE OF SYMPOSIUM
The concept of sustainable development has been accepted by the world community at the UN Summits in Rio de Janeiro. As far back as the beginning of the 20th century the scientists started speaking about the exhaustion of the paradigm, which was based on the principle of nature "conquest" and the need for a new one.Far and by, the economic growth and the improvement of the quality of life were achieved through the depletion of natural resources and the degradation of natural ecosystems and their functions. A good indicator of the state and stability of natural systems is biodiversity.
Ten years after the Rio Summit conference (delete), UN set up the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) at Johannesburg. It includes 50% reduction of the people who suffered from improper water and sanitation by the year of 2015. Fortunately the original goal of water connections by 2015 was achieved in 2010, but approximately 1.9 billion depends on unsafe water quality. UN prepares a new set of goals to water and sanitation by 2030. Without a proper sanitation, the quality of drinking water cannot be secured, as well as quality of life cannot be improved. Further, we may not have healthy food for our healthy life. Ultimately, we may need a holistic approach with green concept to reduce the risks in our society.
To discuss and find solutions of these problems, SEWB and iWcare planning to hold aninternational workshop on Sustainable Water Technology; Appropriate Technology for Water in Asia, which will focus on the following themes:
THEMES
- A holistic approach with green concept
-Nature of sanitation problems; people¡¯s mind and the role of government
- Institutional and legal framework on water and sanitation
- Feasible technologies to treat water/wastewater and to improve sanitation
- Case study for rainwater harvesting, arsenic removal and dry toilet
- Benefits from sanitation. Its cost effectiveness and measurement
- Business opportunities in water and sanitation.
