[미국] 소스 글로벌, 두바이서 공기로 물생산 기술 테스트
두바이에 1천250개의 '태양 에너지 하이드로 패널' 테스트베드 설치

미국에 본사를 둔 소스 글로벌(Source Global)은 최근 '공기를 물로 바꿀 수 있는(transform air into water)' 1천250개의 태양 에너지 하이드로 패널(sun-powered hydro-panel)을 도입하여 이 최첨단 재생 기술 중 가장 큰 테스트베드(test bed)로 두바이(Dubai)를 선택했다고 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 이 회사의 부사장이 말했다.

CNN의 싱크 빅 시리즈(Think Big series)의 최신판은 물 부족을 겪고 있는 나라에 살고 있는 20억 명 이상의 사람들에게 깨끗한 식수를 제공하려는 회사의 목표에 대해 듣기 위해 소스 글로벌(Source Global)의 바히드 포투히(Vahid Fotuhi) 부사장을 만났다.

이 회사는 2050년까지 청정 에너지원으로 75%의 에너지를 생산하기를 희망하고 있다. 두바이 사막은 물을 마시기에 이상적인 장소는 아니지만, 매년 햇빛을 이용하여 150만 리터(L)의 식수를 생산하고 있다고 바히드 포투히(Vahid Fotuhi) 부사장은 말했다.

전 세계의 수십 개의 기업들이 식수를 만들기 위해 공기를 사용하는 기술을 개발하고 있다. 그러나 소스 글로벌(Source Global)은 이 과정이 완전히 지속가능하다고 말했다고 포투히(Fotuhi) 부사장은 CNN에 말했다. "원천 뒤에 숨은 큰 아이디어는 모든 장소에서 모든 사람들에게 완벽한 식수를 제공하는 것이다."

이를 위해 소스 글로벌(Source Global)은  '하이드로 패널(hydropanel)'이라고 하는 기술을 개발했다. 이 장치는 공기를 흡입하는 팬에 전력을 공급하기 위해 태양 에너지를 사용한다. 이 공기는 스펀지 같은 물질로 흘러 들어가 물분자가 흡수되어 증류되고 수집된다.

바히드 포투히(Vahid Fotuhi) 부사장은 "이러한  '하이드로 패널(hydropanel)'은 인프라, 전력 또는 그리드(grid) 없이도 매일 고품질의 식수를 효과적으로 생산할 수 있다"라고 말했다.

현재 48개국에서 운영되고 있는 소스 글로벌(Source Global)은 가장 큰 수상 농장(water farm)으로 두바이를 선택했다. 소스 글로벌(Source Global)은 2017년 두바이에 설립된 이유는 이 지역이 이러한 솔루션에 대한 투자를 간절히 원하기 때문이다.

포투히(Fotuhi) 부사장은 "두바이에 관심을 둔 이유는 무엇보다도 중동, 아프리카 지역의 허브라는 사실 또한 농업과 물과 같은 주요 분야의 새로운 혁신의 중심이다"라고 강조했다.

전문가들은 이 기술이 직면하고 있는 가장 큰 어려움 중 하나가 더 넓은 유통의 어려움이라고 말하지만, 포투히(Fotuhi) 부사장은 사람들이 이 아이디어에 익숙해지도록 하는 것이 더 큰 장애라고 믿고 있다.

포투히(Fotuhi) 부사장은 "대부분의 혁신적인 기술과 마찬가지로, 처음에는 사람들은 변화를 주저한다. 그들은 물 부문에서 새로운 것과 동일한 것을 시도하는 것을 꺼려한다. 이곳 사람들은 물 발생을 위한 주요 해결책에 익숙하며 우리가 제안하는 것은 일종의 다변화 메뉴이다"라고 말했다.

Source Global To Test Its Air-To-Water Technology In Dubai
The company hopes to produce 75% of its energy from clean energy sources by 2050

US-based Source Global recently introduced 1,250 sun-powered hydro-panels that can transform air into water, choosing Dubai for the largest testing bed of this cutting-edge renewable technology, said the company’s vice president speaking to CNN.

The latest edition of CNN’s Think Big series met Vahid Fotuhi Source Global to hear about the company’s aims to provide clean drinking water to more than two billion people living in countries experiencing water scarcity.

The company hopes to produce 75% of its energy from clean energy sources by 2050. While it doesn’t seem the ideal place for water, the Dubai desert is producing 1.5 million litres of drinking water every year using sunlight, said Fotuhi.

Dozens of businesses around the world are working on technologies that use air to make drinking water. But Source says its process is completely sustainable, Fotuhi told CNN: “The big idea behind source is to perfect drinking water for every person in every place.”

To do this, Source developed a technology they call hydropanels. The device uses solar energy to power a fan that draws in air. This air is then channelled into a sponge-like material where water molecules are absorbed to be distilled and collected.

“These hydro panels are effectively producing high quality drinking water day in, day out without requiring any infrastructure, any power or any type of grid.”

Currently operating in 48 countries, Source chose Dubai to be their largest water farm. The company established itself in Dubai in 2017 because it says the region is keen to invest in these solutions, “What attracted us to Dubai? First of all, the fact that it is a hub for the Middle East Africa region, it also is a centre for new innovations for key sectors, such as agriculture and water.”

Experts say one of the biggest challenges facing this tech is the difficulty of wider distribution but Fotuhi believes a bigger hurdle is getting people used to the idea.

“As with most disruptive technologies, initially people are hesitant to change. They're reluctant to try something new and the same holds for the water sector. People here are accustomed to a staple solution for water generation and what we're proposing is kind of diversified menu effectively,” said Fotuhi.
