[일본] 요코가와, 사우디 대규모 해수 담수화시설에 제어 시스템 공급 업체로 선정

환경 고려한 역삼투막 공정으로 시설 전환 지원

요코가와 일렉트릭 코퍼레이션(Yokogawa Electric Corporation)은 자회사인 요코가와 사우디아라비아(Yokogawa Saudi Arabia)가 사우디 국영 식염수전환공사(Saline Water Conversion Corporation, SWCC)로부터 알 주베일 담수화시설(Al Jubail plant)에 해수 역삼투(RO) 기술을 도입하는 '원밀리언 프로젝트'의 제어 시스템 및 기타 솔루션 공급 업체로 선정됐다고 밝혔다. 

 

알 주베일 담수화시설은 일일 100만㎥의 물을 생산할 수 있는 세계적 규모의 시설로, 이 프로젝트의 건설 계약자는 사우디 전기 기계 회사와(Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic Works Company)와 미티토 사우디아라비아(Metito Saudi Arabia) 간의 컨소시엄이다.

알 주베일 담수화시설은 사우디아라비아의 페르시아 만 해안 도시인 주베일에 위치해 있다. 이 프로젝트는 기존의 다단계 플래시 증류(MSF) 설비를 RO 설비로 교체하는 것이 포함된다. 기존 시설을 개선하는 것은 완전히 새로운 시설을 건설하는 것보다 환경 친화적인 접근 방식으로 여겨진다. 중동에서는 한때 화석연료 집약 담수화 공정이 주류를 이루었다. 

 

그러나 최근 몇 년간 막 여과 기술이 발전하면서 점점 더 많은 시설에서 이산화탄소를 덜 배출하며 에너지를 더 적게 사용해 물을 생산하는 RO 기술이 주목받고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 2060년까지 이산화탄소 배출량을 줄이고 넷 제로 배출을 달성하는 것을 목표로 하는 사우디아라비아의 넷 제로 비전 2060(Net Zero Vision 2060) 이니셔티브의 일환이다.

이 프로젝트를 위해 요코가와는 제어 시스템, 안전 계측 시스템, 생산 관리 시스템, 운영자 교육 시뮬레이터 및 사이버 보안 솔루션을 제공할 것이다. 설치는 2024년 1월까지 완료될 예정이며, 새로운 시설은 2024년 12월까지 완전 가동될 것으로 예상된다. 요코가와는 사우디아라비아의 담수화시설을 위한 제어 시스템 공급 및 도시 지역으로 담수를 송수하는 파이프라인 모니터링 시스템을 포함해 전 세계적으로 100개가 이상의 담수화시설 프로젝트에 참여해 왔다.

쿠니마사 시게노(Kunimasa Shigeno) 요코가와 사우디아라비아의 사장 겸 CEO는 “사우디아라비아는 식수의 대부분을 해수 담수화에 의존하고 있으며, 인구가 증가함에 따라 수요가 증가하고 있다"라며 "요코가와는 전 세계 국가의 물인프라 부문과 협력한 경험과 시설 운영 효율성 향상을 위한 디지털 기술 사용에 대한 전문 지식으로 식수의 안정적인 공급뿐만 아니라 온실 가스 배출 감소에도 기여할 것"이라고 말했다.

Yokogawa to Supply Control Systems for World-Scale Seawater Desalination Plant in Saudi Arabia

Supporting the conversion to an environment-conscious reverse osmosis membrane process plant

 

Yokogawa Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6841) announces that its subsidiary, Yokogawa Saudi Arabia, has received an order from the Saline Water Conversion Corporation to supply control systems and other solutions for the One Million Project, which will introduce seawater reverse osmosis (RO) technology at the Al Jubail desalination plant, a world-scale facility with a water production capacity of 1 million m3 per day. The construction contractor for this project is a consortium between Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic Works Company and Metito Saudi Arabia.

The Al Jubail plant is located in Jubail, a city on the Persian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia. This project will replace the existing multi-stage flash distillation (MSF) facilities with RO facilities. Extending the life of the existing plant is seen to be a more environmentally friendly approach than constructing an all-new plant. In the Middle East, the use of fossil fuel-intensive desalination processes was once the mainstream. However, with the advances in membrane filtration techniques that have been achieved in recent years, more and more plants are now turning to the use of the RO technology, which emits less CO2 and produces water using less energy. This project is part of Saudi Arabia’s Net Zero Vision 2060 initiative, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and achieve net zero emissions by 2060.

For this project, Yokogawa will provide control systems, safety instrumented systems, production management systems, operator training simulators, and cybersecurity solutions. Installation is set to be completed by January 2024, and the new facilities are expected to be fully operational by December 2024. Yokogawa has been involved in over 100 desalination plant projects worldwide, including the supply of control systems for desalination plants in Saudi Arabia, and also monitoring systems for pipelines that transport desalinated water to urban areas.
