스웨덴 연구진은 막 증류(membrane distallation) 공정이라고 불리는 새로운 수처리 기술이 하수에서 잔류화학물질을 분리할 수 있다는 것을 증명했다.

 

현재의 막 증류 방식은 국가와 지방자치단체에서 이용하기에는 너무 많은 비용이 소요된다. 일반적으로 폐열을 자유롭게 이용할 수 있는 산업 분야에서만 이 공정이 이용될 수 있다.

 

몇몇 분리막의 투과 모델은 열역학적 또는 역학적 원리를 토대로 만들어졌고, 또 다른 투과 모델들은 분리막 재료의 물리적 특성과 관찰되는 투과 현상의 상호관계를 기본으로 해서 만들어졌다. 이러한 투과 모델들은 투입되는 물질에 따라서 분류된다. 막을 통해 액체를 분리하는 경우는 Membrane-solution system 투과 모델로 대부분 표현될 수 있다.

 

막에서 분리를 유도하는 구동력은 압력, 농도, 온도의 차이다. 기체 분리막은 압력의 차이로 분리가 일어나며 분리막을 통한 기체 투과는 막의 구조에 따라서 다음과 같은 세 가지로 분류될 수 있다.

 

첫 번째는 다공성막으로서 세공의 크기가 분자 평균 자유 경로에 비해서 5배 이상이면 기체 분자와 분리막 간의 충돌보다 분자 간의 충돌이 일어나서 분리되지 않는다. 두 번째는 비다공성막으로서 주로 기체 분리막으로 사용되며 용해-확산 기체투과기구를 따른다. 마지막으로 담체(carrier)를 함유하고 있는 막으로서 특정물질과의 선택적인 결합 능력이 뛰어나다.

 

수증기는 Goretex와 닮은 아주 얇은 친수성 멤브레인과 공극(孔隙, air gap)을 통해서 지나가고, 냉각된 표면 위에 응축된다. 멤브레인의 한 쪽 면 위에 잔류화학물질이 수집되고, 다른 쪽 면 위에 순수한 물이 수집된다.

 

대면적으로 이런 분리 공정을 수행할 수 있는 기술은 현재 없다. 그리고 막 증류 프로세스가 작동하기 위해서, 수온을 매우 높은 온도로 올릴 필요가 없다. 이것은 분리 공정을 수행하는데 큰 장점으로 작용한다.

 

폐수 속의 제약 잔재물은 물고기에게 부정적인 영향을 끼치는 것으로 알려졌고, 심지어 조류의 성장에 영향을 끼칠 수 있었다. 스웨덴 Umea University의 연구진은 Fyris River(스웨덴)에서 검출되는 낮은 수준의 옥사제팜(Oxazepam)이 농어에게 더 부정적인 영향을 끼친다는 것을 발견했다.

 

이것은 강꼬치고기(pike)와 같은 포식동물에게 더 큰 위험을 초래할 수 있다. 이 연구는 농어에서 발견되는 옥사제팜의 농도를 측정했는데, 이것의 농도는 물속에서 6배 이상 더 높았다.

 

이 연구는 항불안제(anti-anxiety drug)의 배출이 수로의 전체 생태계에 영향을 끼칠 수 있다는 것을 나타내는데, 이것은 조류의 발생 정도를 증가 또는 감소시킬 수 있다.

 

Hammarby Sjostadsverket의 막 증류 기술을 테스트해 본 결과, 연구진은 1리터의 폐수당 282나노그램의 옥사제팜을 발견했다. 일반적인 수처리 후에, 이런 약품 농도는 수로로 물이 돌아갈 때 변화되지 않은 채 남아 있었다. 그러나 막 증류 시스템으로 처리될 때, 이런 농도는 리터 당 2 나노그램 이하로 감소되었다.

 

20 세기의 모든 약물의 처리를 진행했을 때, 100% 분리가 실패했던 것은 항우울제인 Sertraline이다. 과학자들은 몇 개의 이론들을 제시했지만, 아직 정확한 이유를 설명할 수 없었다.

 

이번 연구진은 이 기술을 발전시키기 위해서 다음 단계를 준비하고 있다. 연구진은 잔류화학물질을 거의 10배 더 분리시킬 수 있는 새로운 막 증류 기술을 조사하고 있다.

Martin says that water vapor passes through a thin, hydrophobic membrane of material similar to Goretex, and through an air gap, where it condensed onto a cold surface. Drug residues collect on one side of the membrane and pure water on the other.

 

“There is currently no technology capable of doing this cleaning process on a large scale,” Martin says. “And for the membrane distillation process to work, the water temperature does not need to be very high, which is good.”

Pharmaceutical residues in wastewater have been found to alter fish behavior and could even affect the growth of algae. A recent study at Sweden’s Umea University shows even low levels of Oxazepam detected in the Fyris River, in central Sweden, caused perch to become more antisocial, risk prone and active, making them an easier target for predators such as pike. The study measured levels of Oxazepam found in the perch, which were six times higher than in the water itself.

 

The study also indicated that the release of anti-anxiety drugs can affect entire ecosystems in a waterway, possibly contributing to an increases or decreases in the incidence of algae.

 

In a test of the membrane distillation technique at Hammarby Sjostadsverket in Sweden, researchers found a level of 282 nanograms of Oxazepam per litre of wastewater. After ordinary treatment, that level of pharmaceuticals would essentially remain unchanged when the water is returned to the local waterway.

But when treated with the membrane distillation system, the concentration was reduced to less than 2 nanograms per litre.

 

“Of all the 20th century-tested drugs, it is only the remains of the antidepressant Sertraline that we failed to clear 100 percent,” Martin says. “We have some theories, but cannot yet explain why.”
 
Martin and his colleagues are now awaiting results from the next step in the evolution of the technique. They are testing membrane distillation with drug residue levels that are nearly 10 times higher. “These samples are out for analysis right now,” he says.
