일본의 이토추 코퍼레이션(ITOCHU Corporation)은 2010년에 이토추사가 투자한 미국 캘리포니아에 있는 심볼 주식회사(Simbol, Inc.)가 세계 최초로 고온의 지하 염수(Geothermal brine)를 이용하여 99.9% 이상의 순도를 가지는 리튬 카보네이트를 성공적으로 생산하였다고 발표하였다.

 

심볼사의 기술을 이용하여 지열 발전 플랜트에 의해서 제공되는 고온의 염수로부터 리튬을 선택적으로 추출하는 캘리포니아 살튼해(Salton Sea) 근처의 데모 플랜트에서 성공적으로 리튬 카보네이트 생산이 시연되었다. 전세계 리튬 카보네이트와 다른 리튬 화학물질들의 생산의 대략 70%가 남미 지역의 염분이 있는 호수들로부터 얻어진 염수를 태양을 이용한 기화 공정을 통해서 생산된다.

심볼사에 의해 개발된 독특한 생산 기술은 지하에서 얻어지는 고온의 염수를 이용하기 때문에 태양을 이용하는 기화 공정과는 다르게 기후 조건의 변화에 의해서 영향을 받지 않으면서 에너지 비용을 저감시키고 이산화탄소 배출을 제한하게 된다. 이 지역의 지열 발전 플랜트들의 확장과 추가적인 개발이 있으며 새로운 기술을 적용함으로써 심볼사는 수십 배까지 생산 능력을 확대시킬 수 있으며 시장에서 비용 경쟁력을 증가시킬 수 있을 것이다.

심볼사는 시연 플랜트에서 기술적인 실험들을 지속적으로 수행할 것이며 리튬 이온 배터리들에 사용되는 양극 물질들의 제조회사들에게 리튬 카보네이트와 리튬 하이드록사이드 시제품들을 제공할 것이다. 더불어 다른 분야의 제품들을 위한 잠재적인 소비자들에게도 리튬 제품들을 제공할 것이다. 심볼사는 최초의 상업용 플랜트(매년 15,000톤을 생산하는 용량)의 건설을 2013년 말까지 시작할 계획을 가지고 있다. 상업용 플랜트의 운전은 2015년에 시작될 것이다.

리튬 카보네이트와 리튬 하이드록사이드는 리튬이온 배터리의 핵심 부품인 양극 물질들을 생산하기 위해 가장 귀중한 원료 물질들이다. 또한 이들은 리튬 이온 배터리에서 전해 용액을 형성하기 위해 필요한 전해물염(electrolyte salt)들을 생산하기 위하여 사용된다.

 

더욱이 이들은 유리, 세라믹, 윤활유 및 기타 제품들을 생산하기 위하여 사용되는 원료 물질들이다. 리튬 화학물질들에 대한 수요는 전기 자동차들과 기타 제품들의 사용 때문에 성장될 것으로 예상된다. 대략 150,000톤(리튬 카보네이트 기준량)으로 예상되는 전세계의 수요는 2015년까지 250,000톤으로 증가할 것으로 기대되고 있다.

 

 

 

ITOCHU Corporation announced today that California-based Simbol, Inc., in which ITOCHU made an investment in June 2010, has succeeded in producing lithium carbonate (with a purity in excess of 99.9%) using geothermal brine for the first time in the world. This has been achieved at Simbol’s demonstration plant located near the Salton Sea in California by selectively extracting lithium from geothermal brine provided by a geothermal power plant using its own technologies.

 

Approximately 70% of world lithium carbonate and other lithium chemicals production is produced through a solar evaporation process using brine from salt lakes in South America.

 

The unique production technology developed by Simbol uses high temperature geothermal brine, thereby limiting the emission of carbon dioxide and reducing energy costs without being affected by changes in weather conditions as it does not involve solar evaporation. There are additional developments and expansion of these geothermal power plants in this region and by applying this unique technology, Simbol will be able to expand its capacity by few folds, increasing its cost competitiveness in the market.

 

Simbol will continue to carry out technical experiments at its own demonstration plant and provide samples of lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide to manufacturers of cathode materials that are used for lithium-ion batteries (LiB), as well as to other potential customers for different industrial applications.

 

With these initiatives, Simbol plans to commence the construction of its first commercial plant (annual production capacity of 15,000 tons) by the end of the current fiscal year, and to start commercial operation in fiscal 2015.

 

Lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide are core raw materials for producing cathode materials, the main component of LiB, and they are also used for producing electrolyte salts necessary to form electrolyte solution in the LiB.

 

Moreover, they are widely used as raw materials for glass, ceramics, lubricants, and other products. Demand for these lithium chemicals is expected to grow for use in electric vehicles and other products in the future. The Global annual demand, which is currently situated at approximately 150,000 tons (lithium carbonate equivalent) is expected to exceed 250,000 tons in 2017.

 

ITOCHU has obtained an exclusive marketing right to distribute Simbol’s lithium products in the Asia region, including Japan, China and South Korea, and will continue to ensure stable future supply of lithium resources through the sales and marketing of lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide and other lithium chemicals that will be produced in the United States.
