싱가포르에서 최초로 상향류 혐기성 슬러지 기술(USAB, upflow anaerbic sludge blanket)과 세라믹 MBR 기술을 공유한 복합 플랜트가, 산업체에서 사용된 공정수처리 및 재이용 목적으로 정식 오픈되었다.

이 플랜트는 싱가포르 국영 수처리사인 PUB와 싱가포르 기업인 Meiden Singapore에 의해 4천550㎥/일 규모로 건설됐다.

이제까지 산업체에서 사용된 물 재이용은 다량의 유기물질 함유로 처리가 난해하다고 인식되어 왔으나, USAB와 MBR 기술의 사용으로 고품질의 재이용수를 지속적으로 얻을 수 있게 되었다.

USAB 공정으로 1차적으로 유기물질을 제거하고 MBR 공정에서 고효율로 일정한 수질의 물을 생산할 수 있으며, USAB 공정에서 발생하는 bio-gas는 내부의 발전설비에 적용될 수 있다.

이번 프로젝트와 별도로 Meiden Singapore는 세라믹 재질의 MBR 제품 연구개발 센터를 싱가포르 내에 설립하고 공장에서 조립·생산하여, 2015년까지 싱가포르를 세라믹 멤브레인 핵심 국가로 키우는 계획을 추진하고 있다.

Singapore's first ceramic membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant coupled with an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) was opened on 7 March 2014 to treat and recycle industrial used water.

PUB, Singapore's national water agency and Meiden Singapore (MSL), a subsidiary of Meidensha, have built the 4,550 m³/d plant at the Jurong Water Reclamation facility.

The reclamation of industrial used water has conventionally been considered challenging because of its high organic loading. The combined use of UASB and MBR technologies can achieve a consistent, high-quality output of recycled water.

As a pretreatment system, the UASB can remove organic contaminants efficiently, while the downstream ceramic MBR can produce a higher yield and more consistent water quality. The biogas generation from UASB can also be used for in-house power generation.

This collaboration is a result of an MOU signed during the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) in 2010, following which MSL has been conducting verification tests for the ceramic MBR system. Now MSL is taking the research one step further by collaborating with PUB on a demonstration plant to treat and recycle industrial used water.

Along with this investment, MSL will establish a research and development centre and assembly factory for ceramic membrane units in Singapore, as well as a facility for after-sales service in Asia. Singapore will also serve as MSL's regional headquarters for water business in Asia.

Founded in 1975, Meiden has been manufacturing transformers and switchgears primarily for the Asian market. It will become home for the assembly of ceramic membranes in Singapore by 2015.
