GA water usage, needs illustrated in new infographic

ATLANTA, GA, July 16, 2013 -- The state of Georgia is predicted to require twice as much water than it currently uses to meet the needs of the growing state. The four main users of water -- energy, agriculture, industry and municipal -- will require five billion gallons of water every day, even in the most conservative of estimations.

To illustrate these statistics, Burns & McDonnell - Southeast, an award-winning full-service engineering firm, introduced the infographic, "The Big Gulp: Georgia's Water Challenge," which highlights the use of water in Georgia and the projected need in the state by the year 2020.

"Combine our growing population with the addition of power plants and growing industrial needs and we easily get to a projected need of five billion gallons of water every day -- double Georgia's current use," said Wayne Haynie, regional water practice manager, Burns & McDonnell - Southeast. "The infographic shows where Georgia's water need comes from, how quickly that demand will rise beyond our current resource and frames that need in ways we can better understand. With all of our recent rainfall, we may be lulled into thinking our water resources are adequate and nature alone will meet our growing demands -- that's just not going to be enough. We need our expertise and collaboration now to properly address water and wastewater management in every region of the state."

Burns &McDonnell has been working in water engineering and management and its related fields for more than 100 years. Its Southeast team of Professional Engineers offers water and wastewater engineering, planning, conservation and management expertise in Georgia and across the Southeast.
