Plastic pipe serves as innovative solution to West's ongoing drought

JM Eagle, a global manufacturer of plastic pipe, is encouraging cities and municipalities across the nation to conserve water with plastic pipe. With conditions worsening with the drought in the Western United States, the company is sharing the benefits of utilizing plastic pipe in states most affected by water scarcity, including: California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.

In California, for example, Governor Brown has called for a 25-percent reduction in water use throughout the state; cities can reach this goal by using plastic pipe. The underground water infrastructure in the United States is predominantly made up of metal pipe, a material that is prone to leaks and breaks when corroded. In fact, these pipes currently attribute to the loss of 2.6 trillion gallons of treated water per year.

Throughout California and the United States, cities and towns have documented cost savings from plastic pipe upgrades. The city of Pleasanton, Calif., for instance, made the switch after experiencing consistently high failure rates and water loss with an old system made of ductile iron. After the transition, the city showed savings of 70 percent alone on material cost. Plastic pipe will not corrode, leak or break, virtually eliminating the potential for water loss.

JM Eagle is promoting its message to Engineers nationwide with an industry-first online course titled, "The Plastic Pipe Solution for Water Infrastructure Failures." The company's goal is to educate and bring awareness to the benefits of using plastic pipe. This course is a first in a series that will offer engineers and contractors their annual continuing education credits in order to remain licensed.
