Desalination double-whammy helps Acciona enter Qatari market

Spanish firm Acciona Agua has entered the Qatar market by winning two major desalination contracts worth $525 million in a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation and Toyo Thai Corporation.

In March WWi reported that the Ras Abu Fontas A3 desalination plant, using reverse osmosis (RO) membranes was awarded to MC (read WWi story).

Acciona Agua will work with MC and Toyo Thai Corporation to deliver design, construction and later operation and maintenance on this 164,000 m3/day project.

Awarded by water producer Qatar Electricity & Water Co (QEWC), the off-taker for the desalinated water will be utility Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation).

The US$300 million project will be developed under an independent water project (IWP) model with water being supplied over a 25-year period.

Ras Abu Fontas 3 will be a historic moment for large scale membrane desalination in Qatar, with thermal evaporation technology supplying water in the past.

Previous experience of RO in Qatar has been limited and on small scale. One example was a trial in Dukhan, treating 750 m3/day of high salinity water for boiler feedwater.

One of the reasons in the past for the choice of thermal-based desalination has been short-term water storage. With a 24 hour storage, any shortfall in water production due to a perceived ¡°unreliability of technology¡± would generate a loss in the availability of water (see WWi article).

The second win for Acciona is the 284,000 m3/day Facility-D project, as part of an Independent Water & Power Project (IWPP), which will provide 2,500 MW of electric power. Water production capacity will also increase to 614,000 m3/day after the start-up of the new facility, according to Spanish company.
The Qatar double whammy marks a fifth and sixth contract for Acciona in the region.
