Oasys makes further inroads in China
 
US-based forward osmosis specialist, Oasys Water, is to supply its membrane brine concentrator (MBC) technology for a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) application in a chemicals-from-coal plant in the Taiyuan Qing Xu Economic and Technology Development Zone 200km southwest of Beijing.
 
Oasys' local partner, Beijing Woteer, will deliver the integrated ZLD system under an eight- year built, own transfer contract for the Yangmei Taihua coal to chemicals project,

Oasys' proprietary forward osmosis MBC process will be part of a wastewater treatment train treating streams from a boiler makeup water plant with total feed volumes expected at 1,200 m©ø/day.
 
Oasys' chief executive officer, Jim Matheson, said: "China's industrial ZLD market continues to expand rapidly and we are planning additional project announcements in the near future."
 
Matheson said stiffer discharge standards implemented this year in China along with new regulations promoting outsourcing of industrial effluent treatment is fuelling growing interest in the build own transfer contract model for customers as well as the leading Chinese engineering procurement and construction companies such as Woteer. "We believe it will become increasingly common," Matheson predicted.
 
The treatment system of microfiltration, ion exchange polishing and reverse osmosis will produce reject water with a total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration of 75,000 mg/l. The MBC, operating at a targeted recovery of 70%, will further concentrate the stream to 240,000 mg/l to feed a crystallizer and complete the ZLD process.
 
Oasys and Woteer installed recently as similar set up at Huaneng's Changxing power station to treat flue gas desulphurization effluent and cooling tower blowdown from the new 1.3 GW coal-fired plant.
