Flint mayor meets with county chairman to discuss city's water action plan

Flint's mayor met with Genesee County officials to discuss the city's Incident Action Plan.

Mayor Karen Weaver met with Genesee County Board Chairman Jamie Curtis on Wednesday, Dec. 30, and discussed the Incident Action Plan, according to a news release from the City of Flint. Curtis added additional components to the plan to safeguard public health and clarify the role the county has played in supporting relief efforts and providing public information up to this date.

The plan was submitted to the Genesee County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 15 days after Weaver declared a State of Emergency over elevated lead levels in the city's water, according to the release.

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver spoke briefly of the plan during a special meeting Wednesday night after questioned by Councilman Eric Mays on the discussion she had with Curtis.

"I think we did a very nice job. We went into a lot of detail," said Weaver of the document she called a draft that's been sent to council members.

Weaver noted part of the plan dealing with support for children and families may involve help from the county health department and she spoke with Curtis on information that would help in the process.

"It's something we can continue to add to," she said. "We may take some things out of there as things are made available to us."

Elevated blood lead levels were found in children around the city and was announced in September. The Genesee County Health Department declared a Public Health Emergency on Oct. 1.

Key points of the Incident Action Plan include providing both immediate relief and long term solutions to safeguard the public health and rebuild the city's damaged and antiquated water distribution infrastructure, according to the release. Long-term solutions include the eventual replacement of lead water lines as a key factor in providing safe, clean water to residents.

Expanded services like WIC, the double-up food bucks program, and Project Fresh have been proposed in order to better provide high-quality nutrition to residents to help cope with lead exposure, according to the release.

The Incident Action Plan will be announced in its entirety and presented to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners Monday, Jan. 4.
