미국 환경보호청(EPA)은 미국 전 지역에 걸쳐 도시와 농촌 지역 사회의 개인은 물론 소유자들의 소규모 마을 폐수 처리 시스템의 보조 지원금으로 1천270만 달러를 지원한다고 발표했다. 시스템을 통해 소규모 마을의 운영 및 관리 관행을 개선하고 지속가능한 경영 시스템을 촉진해 보다 나은 공공의 건강과 환경을 보호할 수 있도록 교육 및 기술 지원을 받을 수 있다.

 

미국 내 공공 상하수도 시스템의 97% 이상인 15만7천 개 시스템은 1만 명 미만의 지역에 서비스를 제공하고 80 % 이상은 적은 500명 미만의 지역에 서비스를 제공한다. 이에 많은 소규모 시스템은 연방 및 주 정부 규정을 충족시키고 신뢰할 수 있는 상하수도 서비스를 제공해야 하는 과제에 직면하게 되었다.

 

 

 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the award of $12.7 million in grants to help small drinking and wastewater systems and private well owners located in urban and rural communities throughout the U.S. and its territories. The water systems will receive training and technical assistance to improve small system operations and management practices, promote system sustainability, and better protect public health and the environment.

 

More than 97 percent of the nation’s 157,000 public water systems serve fewer than 10,000 people, and more than 80 percent of these systems serve fewer than 500 people. Many small systems face unique challenges in providing reliable drinking water and wastewater services that meet federal and state regulations. These challenges can include a lack of financial resources, aging infrastructure, and high staff turnover.

 

“Ensuring safe drinking water for all Americans, whether they live in a small town or a big city, is a priority for EPA and these grants will help smaller systems in communities across the country,” said Joel Beauvais, Deputy Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Water.
