Program aims to manage aging water infrastructure in New Jersey

As a member of Jersey Water Works, a collaborative effort to transform New Jersey's urban water infrastructure, Louis Berger recently collaborated with partners at Rutgers University, New Jersey Future and the Natural Resources Defense Council to develop the New Jersey A¡¤I¡¤M¡¤S4 program. The program comprises a set of innovative tools to manage sewer and stormwater infrastructure, while improving the environment, economy and quality of life.

Louis Berger was retained by New Jersey Future, a leading smart growth policy and advocacy organization, on behalf of Jersey Water Works, to develop the program. The program facilitates broader adoption of effective strategies to managing sewer and stormwater infrastructure systems, and aims to be a "win-win" for municipalities and utilities that seek to achieve both regulatory compliance and lower infrastructure life cycle costs.

"The water infrastructure in New Jersey's urban communities is aging and largely inadequate to meet present and future demands," said Niek Veraart, vice president of environmental planning at Louis Berger. "The challenges of delivering modern services, improving aging infrastructure and meeting regulatory requirements with limited resources affect sewer and stormwater infrastructure system managers in cities and towns across the country. As a member of Jersey Water Works, Louis Berger is proud to have been involved in the development of this program with the other partners, and hope that New Jersey's utilities and Departments of Public Works will begin using it to address these challenges soon."

The program was released December 10 at the New Jersey Urban Water Conference. Over the next few months, Jersey Water Works will promote the implementation of the program to ensure long-term progress.
