Oman set to sign deal for new desalination capacity
Oman's government-owned electricity and desalination company, Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP), was poised this week to sign agreements with Spanish-Omani joint venture, Myah Gulf Oman Desalination Company to develop a 250,000 m©ø/day Independent Water Project (IWP) in Sohar.
According to a report in the Oman Daily Observer the Myah Gulf Oman consortium will design, construct, own, finance, operate and maintain the seawater reverse osmosis desalination project. Output from the plant is committed to OPWP under a 20-year water purchase agreement. The plant is scheduled to start operation in 2018.
Myah Gulf Oman won the deal in a competitive tender. Water services firm and subsidiary of Spanish construction and engineering group Sacyr, Valoriza Agua, is a is a 51% shareholder in the consortium. Its other shareholders are Oman Brunei Investment Company with 25% and Sogex Oman 24%.
