[Gaza] 새 담수화 공장 개방 준비

가자(Gaza) 지역의 새로운 담수화 공장이 중동 담수화 연구센터(Middle East Desalination Research Center, 이하 MEDRC)에서 테스트(testing) 및 기술 훈련을 완료한 후 생산을 위한 가동을 준비 중에 있다고 무스카트(Muscat) 데일리지가 밝혔다.

MEDRC는 데이르 알 발라(Deir al Balah) 지역의 담수화 공장을 개발 중에 있는 팔레스타인의 물관리공단(Water Authority)과 Coastal Municipality Water Utility를 지원해 오고 있다. 데이르 알 발라(Deir al Balah)에 들어서게 될 공장은 약 15만 명의 사람들에게 하루당 6천㎥에 달하는 물을 제공할 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.

2012년 UN은 가자 지구(Gaza Strip)에서 하나밖에 없는 대수층으로부터 과도한 지하수를 추출하게 되면 2016년까지 사용할 수 없게 됨은 물론, 2020년까지 되돌릴 수 없는 막대한 손실을 가져올 수도 있다고 보도를 통해 경고했다. 이에 유럽연합(EU)와 유니세프(UNICEF)는 2019년까지 용량이 두 배에 이를 것으로 기대되는 새로운 공장 건설에 자금을 지원하는 등 도움을 아끼지 않고 있다.

New desalination plant poised to open in Gaza

A new desalination plant in Gaza is poised to begin producing after testing and technical training was completed by the Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC), reports Muscat Daily.

MEDRC has been supporting the Palestinian Water Authority and Coastal Municipality Water Utility in developing the Deir al Balah Desalination Plant, which has capacity of 6,000㎥/d and will serve 150,000 people.

In 2012, a UN report warned that over extraction of groundwater from the Gaza Strip's only aquifer could make it unusable by 2016, with damage becoming irreversible by 2020. The European Union and UNICEF responded by financing the construction of the plant, whose capacity is expected to double by 2019.
