Councilwoman's wish: Countertop water pitchers with lead filters donated to Pittsburgh residents

A city councilwoman on Tuesday announced a campaign to raise a half-million dollars to put countertop water pitchers in Pittsburgh homes. The pitchers would be fitted with with lead filters and be placed in homes with children 6 years of age and younger.

The plan by Councilwoman Deb Gross, who represents District 7, is a direct response to reports that lead has been found in service lines in some of the city's older homes.

"What we can do now is provide water filters, and I'm saying today, that's what we should do," Gross said. "We should provide water filters, even countertop water pitchers, NSF-certified to remove all lead."

Gross has not identified a funding source but said she will lean on other council members, the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority and community organizations to help generate money for the campaign.

She hopes to have money secured by the summer as a stopgap until lead-filled service lines to homes can be replaced.

"That is something we should do. We should do it because we can do it today," Gross said. "It will take us years to replace these lead water service lines."
