캐나다는 ‘청정수질 및 하·폐수기금(CWWF)’을 통해 마들렌느섬(Magdalen Islands) 2개 수자원 개선 프로젝트에 440만 달러 이상을 지원한다고 최근 밝혔다.

"우리는 시민들이 현대적 시설에서 깨끗한 수돗물 공급과 하·폐수처리 서비스를 누릴 수 있도록 상하수도 기반 시설 건설을 위한 투자에 최선을 다하고 있다"라고 다이앤 레보실리어(Diane Lebouthillier) 연방 국세청장은 말했다.

아마지트 소이(Amlajeet Sohi) 캐나다 연방정부 사회기반시설 장관도 "마들렌느섬의 새로운 수자원 프로젝트는 주민들에게 쾌적한 환경과 복지를 위한 것이며, 우리는 협력사와의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 주민들에게 맑은물 공급 및 환경을 보호하고 공중 위생을 개선하는데 도움이 되는 스마트 인프라 투자에 노력하여 경제 성장과 일자리 창출에 일조를 할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Canada's Clean Water and Wastewater Fund announces $4.4M designation to Magdalen Islands
   

 
MAGDALEN ISLANDS, QC, MAY 8, 2017 -More than $4.4 million for two water projects in the Municipality of Magdalen Islands has been designated under Canada's Clean Water and Wastewater Fund(CWWF).

"We are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet their needs," said Diane Lebouthillier, minister of national revenue and member of parliament for Gaspesie-Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine, on behalf of Amarjeet Sohi, minister of infrastructure and communities.

 "These new projects on the Magdalen Islands will safeguard the environment and well-being of residents. We will continue working in close collaboration with our partners to ensure we make smart infrastructure investments that help protect the environment and preserve public health, while paving the way for economic growth and for the creation of good-paying middle-class jobs."

This financial support for the Municipality of Magdalen Islands will contribute to maintaining, renewing or developing their infrastructure to ensure the production and distribution of quality drinking water for residents or the proper disposal and treatment of wastewater. The Government of Canada is investing almost $2.7 million for these projects, and the Government of Quebec is providing almost $1.8 million for a total joint contribution of more than $4.4 million. The municipality will provide the remainder of the funding. These projects are in addition to the three projects already announced in Gaspesie under the CWWF.

The approval of the projects under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund was made possible by the signing of a bilateral agreement between Canada and Quebec in July 2016, which made funding available for water projects across the province.

"Thanks to this important investment, the Municipality of Magdalen Islands will be able to complete important projects to meet its needs related to drinking water and wastewater treatment infrastructure," said Germain Chevarie, member for Iles-de-la-Madeleine, on behalf of Martin Coiteux, minister of municipal affairs and land occupancy, minister of public security, and minister responsible for the Montreal area. "The financial support announced today clearly shows how working in partnership is improving the quality of life of our fellow citizens."

Thanks to its base financial assistance rate of 83%, the CWWF is allowing municipalities to invest almost $800 million in infrastructure projects. Over the period of 2016 to 2018, the federal government will provide $363.8 million and the provincial government will provide $300 million for a total joint investment of $664 million. The implementation of the CWWF was made possible by the signing of a bilateral agreement between Canada and Quebec in July 2016, which made funding available for water projects across the province.

This fund is part of the Investing in Canada plan, the Government of Canada's historic plan that provides more than $180 billion in infrastructure funding to improve public transit, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, transportation that supports trade, and Canada's rural and northern communities.

Budget 2017 proposed $21.9 billion over 11 years for investments for green infrastructure. This amount includes $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

The Government of Canada is contributing $2,681,564, representing 50% of the total eligible costs, and the province is providing $1,789,832. The municipality will provide the remaining funding.
