Want to be Sure Your Drinking Water is Safe From Lead? Get It Tested

This story is produced and presented by Vermont Department of Health

The exposure of thousands of residents of Flint, Mich., to high levels of lead in their drinking water in 2016 has caused many to wonder: Could my family also be at risk?

Here in Vermont, if you have private well water and want to know if it contains lead, you have to get your water tested.

¡°Since you can¡¯t see, taste or smell lead dissolved in water, testing is the only sure way of telling whether there are harmful levels of lead in your drinking water,¡± said Matthew Bradstreet, chief of the Healthy Homes & Lead Poisoning Prevention Program for the Vermont Department of Health.

Lead is a toxic metal that can enter your drinking water from pipes and fittings, lead solder, and brass or chrome fixtures, Bradstreet said. Lead pipes were commonly used for drinking water until the 1940s. Vermont banned lead pipe fittings in the early 1970s, and in 1988 Vermont plumbing rules banned lead solder. Today, those rules allow only faucets and fittings that meet National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) standards for lead.

Lead in your drinking water could cause damage to the brain, kidneys and nervous system. It can also slow growth and development, damage hearing, speech and motor control, and even cause behavior problems in children.

¡°It¡¯s important to follow the recommendations to test your water, because the health effects of lead are so detrimental and largely irreversible,¡± Bradstreet said. ¡°Children under age 6 and pregnant women are most at risk, but healthy adults who have significant lead exposure can also experience serious negative health effects, including nerve damage and reduced motor function.¡±

You can have your well water tested for lead as part of the Health Department¡¯s recommended homeowner¡¯s drinking water test kits for $159. Test kits are available through the Health Department Laboratory by calling 1-855-472-6979.

Since flushing your pipes usually lowers the lead level in private water, you can also order a first draw lead test for $12 to see how much lead can dissolve from the pipes when water sits in them overnight. You may also want to order this test kit if you use public water, because even though that water is treated to keep lead out, the plumbing in your home may still leach lead into your water.

You can reduce lead in your drinking water by using NSF approved devices including plug-in distillation units, point-of-use carbon filters, a reverse osmosis treatment or specialty filtration unit for under the kitchen sink, or filtration system designed for the entire home.

¡°When in doubt about lead in your water, have the water tested to keep you and your family safe,¡± Bradstreet said.
