[미국] WQA, EWG의 수돗물 데이터베이스 지원

국제 수질협회(WQA)는 소비자가 그들의 지역 식수에 들어있는 오염물질을 더 잘 알 수 있도록 EWG(Environmental Working Group)가 새로 출시한 수돗물 데이터베이스를 지원한다.

 
WQA의 공무이사인 데이비드 러브데이(David Loveday)는 "소비자가 그들의 식수에 무엇이 들어있는지 아는 것은 중요하다"며 "EWG의 이러한 새로운 도구는 전국 각지의 주택 소유자가 물 테스트를 고려해야 하는지 또는 수처리가 필요한지 결정하는 데 도움이 될 것"이라고 말했다.

 
이 데이터베이스는 2010년부터 2015년까지 50개 주와 워싱턴 D.C.의 약 5만 개의 유틸리티에서 시행된 미국 환경보호국(EPA)의 테스트 결과를 포함한다. 소비자는 우편 번호를 입력하여 해당 지역 식수의 품질에 대해 더 자세히 알 수 있다.

 
EPA는 거의 모든 지역사회의 물 시스템이 매년 7월 1일까지 소비자 신뢰 보고서(CCR)를 발행하도록 요구한다. 그러나 최근 국제 수질협회가 진행한 국가 연구에 따르면, 미국 전역 가구 중 62%가 커뮤니티의 CCR을 받아 읽었는지 아는지를 모른다. 이는 2015년 기준 56%에서 증가한 수치이다.

 
거주자는 인증된 물테스트 실험실을 통해 식수를 테스트해야 한다. 주택 소유자는 WQA(http://www.wqa.org)에서 수질 전문인을 찾거나 USEPA를 통해 인증된 시험 연구소와 연락할 수 있다.

WQA SUPPORTS EWG'S TAP WATER DATABASE

The Water Quality Association supports the Environmental Working Group's newly released Tap Water Database as a way for consumers to learn more about the kinds of contaminants that might be in their local drinking water.

 
"It's important for consumers to know what's in their drinking water," said WQA Government Affairs Director David Loveday. "This new tool from EWG will help homeowners across the country determine whether they should consider having their water tested and whether they need some form of water treatment."

 
The database contains the results of tests from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from nearly 50,000 utilities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia from 2010 to 2015. Consumers can enter their zip code to learn more about the quality of their local drinking water.

 
The EPA requires nearly all community water systems to issue a Consumer Confidence Report every year by July 1st, but according to a recent national studyconducted for WQA, 62 percent of households across the United States either didn't read or don't know if they received their community's CCR. That's up from 56 percent in a 2015 survey.

Residents should have their drinking water tested through a certified water-testing laboratory. Homeowners can check with the Water Quality Association at http://www.wqa.org to find a water quality professional or connect with a certified testing lab through the USEPA.
