[칠레] BHP와 콜데코, 칠레 담수화 프로젝트 추진

로이터 통신은 칠레의 구리 광산업을 지원하기 위한 두 차례의 담수화 프로젝트가 진행되고 있다고 전했다.

오스트레일리아 최대 규모의 광업회사인 BHP 빌리턴(BHP Billiton)은 칠레의 스펜스(Spence) 구리 광산에 담수화 플랜트를 건설하기 위해 스페인의 미쓰이 물산(Mitsui & Co)과 코브라 그룹(Grupo Cobra)의 컨소시엄과 협의 중이다.

이를 위해 칠레의 아타카마(Atacama) 사막에서 광산을 확장하려는 계획은 지난 7월 환경규제기관인 SEA의 승인을 받았다. 이번 프로젝트로 남태평양 연안 안토파가스타(Antofagasta City)시에서 북쪽으로 약 60km 떨어진 메질론스 항구(Mejillones port)에 8억 달러 규모의 해수담수화 플랜트가 건설될 예정이다.

한편 칠레의 국영 구리 생산업체인 콜데코(Coldeco)는 안토파가스타에서 12억 달러 규모의 담수화 플랜트에 대한 입찰 후보 리스트를 확인했으며, 올해 말까지 계약을 체결할 계획이다. 이 소식은 지난 8월 7일부터 11일까지 로이터의 라틴 아메리카 투자 정상 회담(Latin American Investment Summit)에서 발표된 내용이다.

BHP and Coldeco push forward Chilean desal projects

Two major desalination projects to support the copper mining industry in Chile are moving ahead, reports Reuters.

BHP Billiton is in talks with a consortium of Japan’s Mitsui & Co, and Grupo Cobra, of Spain, to build a desalination plant at Spence copper mine in Chile.

A proposal to expand the mine in Chile’s Atacama desert was approved by the country’s environmental regulator SEA, in July 2017. The expansion includes an $800 million seawater desalination plant at Mejillones port, about 60 kilometres north of Antofagasta City on the South Pacific coast.

Meanwhile Chilean state-owned copper producer Coldeco has identified a shortlist of bidders for its $1.2 billion desalination plant in Antofagasta, and aims to award a contract by the end of 2017. The news emerged at Reuters Latin American Investment Summit, 7 to 11 August 2017.
