[네덜란드] 슐저, 하·폐수 유틸리티 에너지 중립 지원
하폐수 슬러지에서 20∼30% 더 많은 양의 바이오가스 생산

네덜란드 정부가 바이오 전력 혁신 계획을 발표하고 하·폐수 처리 과정에서 발생하는 슬러지로부터 바이오가스를 생산하는 에너지 중립 공정에 주목하고 있는 가운데, 슐저(Sulzer)가 이를 실현할 하·폐수 유틸리티 플랜트에 장비와 전문 지식을 공급한다.

슐저는 네덜란드 리비에런랜드 수도국(Rivierenland Water Authority)이 환경에 미치는 영향을 줄이고 하·폐수 처리 시스템 성능을 개선하기 위해 구축 중인 새로운 플랜트에 투자 업체로 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

Sleeuwijk 지역에 지어질 새로운 하·폐수 플랜트는 3개의 폐수 처리 시설을 하나로 통합하고 발전 장치에 공급하기 위해 슬러지에서 바이오 가스를 생산하는 신기술을 적용한 플랜트가 될 것이다. 리비에런랜드 수도국은 이를 통해 2030년까지 하·폐수 처리장의 에너지 중립을 실현하겠다는 목표다.

슐저는 플랜트가 에너지 중립 목표를 달성할 수 있도록 최고 수준의 효율성을 갖춘 다양한 펌프, 교반기, 터보 압축기, 디퓨저 및 흐름 부스터를 공급한다. 또 슬러지를 혼합하고 준비하는 맞춤형 접근 방식을 개발해 효율적으로 분해하여 기존 대비 20∼30% 더 많은 양의 바이오가스를 생산할 수 있도록 지원한다.

슐저의 프레데릭 라라네(Frédéric Lalanne) 플로우 장비(Flow Equipment) 사업부 사장은 “이 프로젝트는 고객이 운영의 지속 가능성을 개선할 수 있도록 지원하려는 우리의 약속을 잘 보여준다. 새로운 하·폐수 처리장은 해당 지역의 하수 처리 성능과 효율성을 최적화하여 약 9만 명에게 서비스를 제공할 것이다”라고 말했다.

Sulzer supporting Netherlands wastewater utility to become energy neutral by producing biogas from sludge

An innovative bio-power scheme in the Netherlands is using a new process to produce biogas from sludge during wastewater treatment. Sulzer was selected to supply equipment and expertise to the plant, one of the first of its kind. Sulzer’s wastewater treatment specialists developed a customized solution to mix the sludge, a key part of the process, helping the plant to increase biogas production by 20-30%.

The utility that serves around 90’000 people is now on track to achieve energy neutrality by 2030.

The Rivierenland Water Authority in the Netherlands is investing in new infrastructure to improve the performance of its wastewater treatment systems while also reducing its impact on the environment. The Energie Fabriek West (Energy Factory West) project in Sleeuwijk consolidates three wastewater treatment facilities into one and includes new technology to produce biogas from sludge to supply a power generation unit. With this, it plans to become energy neutral by 2030.

The plant’s process relies on a highly complex flow-control system, pumping the sludge between different compartments and mixing it to prepare it for maximum biogas production.

Sulzer’s wastewater treatment specialists developed a customized approach to mix and prepare the sludge, allowing it to be broken down more efficiently to produce increased amounts of biogas. The company supplied a range of pumps, agitators, turbocompressors, diffusers and a flow booster, all with the highest levels of efficiency to help the plant reach its goal of energy neutrality.

Frédéric Lalanne, President of Sulzer’s Flow Equipment division, commented: “This project exemplifies our commitment to supporting customers to improve the sustainability of their operations.

The new wastewater plant optimizes the performance and efficiency of sewage treatment in the area, serving some 90’000 people.

But most importantly the new technology at the plant puts the utility on a path to achieving its goal of becoming energy neutral in the next 10 years.”

Construction and commissioning of all the equipment was completed on schedule during 2020. The Energy Factory began full operation in 2021 and has been performing efficiently since.
