AECOM to design Al Ansab Phase 2 MBR in Oman

Phase 2 of the Al Ansab Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Muscat, Oman, which will be based on membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology, will be designed by AECOM.

A Rial 600,000 (US$ 1.56 million) contract for the design, which includes Azaiba Central Pump Station (CPS), was awarded by Haya Water.

It will include conducting all necessary surveys and wastewater analysis, as well as assessing the existing STP and CPS, providing detailed engineering design documents for sewage and sludge treatment facilities, and performing the evaluation process of the construction bids.

The only other qualified bidders were Halcrow and Parsons.

AECOM's design will use flat-sheet MBR technology to degrade organic matter and remove solids, including harmful bacteria, from the water, allowing it to be reused for irrigation. When complete, the plant will be one of the largest flat-sheet MBR facilities in the world, capable of treating up to 22 MIGD (100,000 m©ø/d) of sewage per day.

AECOM designed the original Al Ansab STP in 2002. The new project is expected to take nine months for completion and will involve teams from Oman, the US and the UAE.
