체사피크(Chesapeake) 만 저류지에 가동되는 현장 하수처리 시범사업 프로그램이 최근 미국 환경보존협회(EPA)를 통해 발표되었다. 이를 통해 이 지역을 둘러싼 많은 주들의 질소 등의 부영양화를 감소시키고 현장과 정화 시설을 통해 만을 들어갔다 나오는 물의 수질을 높여 상수도 서비스의 질도 향상될 전망이다.

이 시범 사업 프로그램은 EPA와 주, 지자체 파트너들의 협업의 결과이며 2009년 체사피크만을 국보로 인정하고 미국의 가장 큰 만이자 저류지인 이 지역의 보호와 보전을 위해 사명을 다하라는 오바마 대통령의 직접적인 명령을 수행하게 된다. NSF International의 하수 처리 기준은 이번 프로그램에서 공공의 건강과 환경을 부적절하게 처리된 하수로부터 보호하기 위해 처리 기술의 영향을 평가할 때 사용되었다.

ANN ARBOR, MI, July 26, 2013 -- A new model program for onsite wastewater treatment systems in the Chesapeake Bay watershed was recently published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help states reduce excessive nutrients, such as nitrogen, from entering the Bay from onsite or septic systems, as well as help protect surface and groundwater quality.

The model program is part of the EPA's collaboration with state and local partners to help enable an executive order that President Obama signed in 2009 recognizing the Chesapeake Bay as a national treasure and calling on the government to protect and restore the nation's largest estuary and its watershed. NSF International's Wastewater Standards are referenced in the program as a basis to evaluate treatment technologies intended to help protect human health and the environment from inadequately treated wastewater.

"We support EPA's move to further protect our nation's water supply as it aligns with NSF International's commitment to protect and improve environmental health," said Tom Bruursema, General Manager of NSFs Sustainability Division. "EPA's model program for improving our nation's onsite wastewater infrastructure references NSF Internationals American National Standards (ANSI) wastewater standards as the basis to evaluate the proper selection, use and management of onsite, decentralized treatment systems."
