Flat sheet MBR treatment set for Oman¡¯s Al Ansab wastewater expansion

Haya Water, the trading name of Oman Wastewater Services, has awarded AECOM a US$1.5 million contract to design phase two of the Al Ansab Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and Azaiba Central Pump Station (CPS) in Muscat, Oman.

Flat-sheet-membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology will be used as part of the design, capable of treating up to 110,000 m3/day.

The Al Ansab upgrade is part of Haya Water¡¯s Water Reuse Project (see WWi story) to implement a 290 kilometer long network for the transportation and distribution of treated water.

The network covers the provinces from Wilayat of Greater Muttrah to the Wilayat of Barka with a main pipeline of 1000 millimeter diameter and between 100-500 millimeter diameters for the subsidiary conduits.

All of Haya Water¡¯s wastewater treatment plants are expected to use MBR technology. Oman now produces about 80,000 m3/day of treated wastewater for reuse, which is expected to  increase to 220,000 m3/day when the project is completed by 2018. It is expected that 80% of Muscat residents will be connected to the sewage networks by that time.

About 50,000 m3/day of treated wastewater has been earmarked for irrigation purposes by Muscat Municipality to irrigate parks and public garden as well as the plants and trees on Sultan Qaboos Road.

Services will include conducting surveys and wastewater analysis, as well as assessing the existing STP and CPS, providing engineering design documents for sewage and sludge treatment facilities, and performing the evaluation process of the construction bids.

Treated Effluent produced by Haya Water is monitored by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs.

AECOM designed the original Al Ansab STP in 2002. The new project is expected to take nine months for completion and will involve teams from Oman, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
