미국 소비자제품안전협의회(U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)은 최근 이어졌던 익사에 가까웠던 수영장 안전사고에 대한 미디어의 보도에 대응해 수영장 및 스파 안전 자원과 사용 팁을 제공하였다.

연방 법안은 공공 수영장 및 스파 소유자들에게만 더욱 안전하고 익사를 방지하는 배수구 커버를 설치할 것을 요구한다. 소비자제품안전협의회는 주거용 단지에 위치한 사유 수영장 및 스파 소유자들에게도 더욱 안전한 배수구 덮개를 소지 및 설치할 것을 당부한 것이다. 이 새로운 배수구 덮개는 100 달러도 안 하지만 필히 전문가에 의해 설치·관리되어야 한다.

배수구 흡착·익사 사고는 사람의 신체, 머리카락, 관절이나 각종 옷가지가 수영장의 순환 흡수력에 의해 배수구에 얽히거나 고정된 상황에서 발생한다. 이 사고에 대한 최고의 처방은 일어나기 전에 대비하는 것이다.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is providing pool and spa safety resources and tips for the media covering the high-profile near-drowning incident this week.

Federal law requires public pool and spa owners and operators to install safer, anti-entrapment drain covers.  CPSC is encouraging residential pool and spa owners to have these safer drain covers installed in their privately-owned pools and spas.  A new drain cover costs less than $100, but should be installed and maintained by professionals. 

A drain entrapment occurs when a person's body, hair, limb or article of clothing becomes entangled in or held against a pool or spa drain by the force of the circulation system.  The best defense against an entrapment is to prevent it before it can happen.

The Pool Safely campaign is a key component of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.  This child safety law mandates new requirements for public pools and spas, including a public information campaign. The Pool Safely campaign advises adding as many safety steps as possible around pools or spas, including residential pools.
