EDS publishes June solar desalination course program

The European Desalination Society (EDS) has published the program for its three-day intensive course on Desalination With Solar Energy to be held in Almeria, Spain, on 11~13 June 2014.
The general purpose of the course is to provide experts, professionals and postgraduate students from all around the world with the latest knowledge of the different existing technologies involving the use of solar energy to drive desalination techniques.

The course will instruct scientists and technicians on the basic principles of desalination using solar energy, the state of the art of the most promising technologies and the experiences acquired so far.
The course is in four modules:

1. Introduction: Fundamentals of solar energy; Fundamentals of water desalination; Conventional desalination technologies; and Research trends in desalination.
2. State of the art of low capacity solar desalination technologies: Desalination with photovoltaic energy; Solar ponds and brine management; Low capacity solar thermal distillation systems; and Solar powered membrane distillation.
3. State of the art of high capacity solar desalination technologies: High capacity solar thermal distillation systems; Coupling of desalination with solar power generation; and Economical aspects of desalination using solar energy.
4. Technical visit to Plataforma Solar de Almeria (CIEMAT-PSA) installations: Technical visit to solar power production installations; Technical visit to solar multi-effect distillation plant; and Technical visit to other desalination facilities (membrane distillation, solar-driven ORC, CSP+D test-bed).
Lecturers will be Julian Blanco, course director and associate director of PSA; Diego-Cesar Alarcon-Padilla, head of Solar Desalination Unit of CIEMAT; and Guillermo Zaragoza, coordinator of the Renewable Energy Desalination Action Group of the European Innovation Partnership on Water (European Commission).

Details and a registration form can be downloaded from the EDS or contact balabanmiriam@gmail.com.
