Industrial development driving global water treatment equipment market, study finds

According to a comprehensive global report, titled "Water and Wastewater Treatment Equipment" and published by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA), the global market for water and wastewater treatment equipment is forecast to reach $53.4 billion by 2020, stemmed by increasing population, urbanization, improving manufacturing activity, and rising oil and gas production, among others.

Concurrently, expanding global population and a subsequent focus on industrialization are the key factors fuelling growth in the global water treatment equipment market. Water treatment equipment manufacturers are also set to gain from the pent-up demand following underinvestments in infrastructure by municipalities and private sector in recent years.

Economic development along with fast-paced urbanization especially in emerging countries is spurring this need for efficient water management solutions. Moreover, resurgence in the global manufacturing sector is benefiting demand, as expanding production in various industries promotes the need for water and wastewater treatment, given the growing need for water conservation and tightening environmental regulations. Replacement of old water infrastructure in regions such as the United States is also aiding market growth.

The municipal segment is the leading end-use sector with demand driven by growing need for high-quality potable water, especially in urban areas. Increased use of equipment such as activated carbon systems, membrane systems and disinfection equipment to enhance quality of drinking water is also aiding demand in the segment. The water treatment equipment market is also gaining impetus from surging activity in the oil & gas sector, as water generated during the production of oil is increasingly being reused. Growing interest in the production of shale gas around the world is particularly expected to fuel demand for equipment due to the attractive opportunity to treat wastewater generated from the hydraulic fracturing process as well as produced water generated from shale formation.

Demand for water disinfection is on rise, led by growing popularity of technologies such as ultraviolet disinfection (UV). UV treatment is gaining over chlorination as it does not suffer from the disadvantages of chlorination, and the process is also relatively efficient and economical. Demand for membrane treatment is also surging for industrial water and wastewater treatment led by growing focus on water reuse, particularly in developed countries and the growing need for quality water.

Rising standards for supply and process water in production and other such industrial applications will also spur demand for membrane equipment. Desalination technologies which convert seawater water into fresh potable water are also gaining demand, owing to the declining freshwater resources. Zero liquid discharge system is another technology growing in popularity in the market for emission and effluent-free recycling of wastewater generated by a facility.
