연간 약 5만기가와트시 에너지 생산해 1천100가구에 전기 공급 예정

ACWA Power(ACWA Power)는 7월 17일부터 10GW 규모의 달린 프로젝트를 개조하여 최대 담수화 기업을 만들기 위해 신재생에너지청(New and Renewable Energy Authority, NREA)과 계약서(MoU)를 체결합니다.

이 협약은 신도시 엘 알라메인 소재 각료 이사회 본부에서 모하메드 엘 카야트(Mohamed El Khayat) NREA 회장과 하산 아민(Hassan Amin) ACWA 파워의 이집트 지사장의 서명으로 체결됐다. 서명식에는 무스타파 마드불리(Moustafa Madbouly) 이집트 총리, 모하메드 샤케르(Mohamed Shaker) 이집트 전기부 장관,  마자드 빈 무함마드 알후와이샨(Mazyad bin Muhammad Al-Huwaishan) 이집트 알렉산드리아 주재 사우디아라비아 총영사, 사바 마살리(Sabah Mashaly) EETC 회장, 마르코 아르첼리(Marco Arcelli) ACWA 파워의 CEO가 참석한 가운데 열렸다. 이번 협약은 대규모 재생 에너지 시설 개발에 있어 진전을 나타낸다.

모하메드 셰이커 알 마르카비 전기 및 재생 에너지부 장관은 "이집트는 화석 연료로부터 에너지 자립을 위한 투자를 장려하고, 신재생 에너지 자원의 활용을 극대화하는 것을 포함해 다양한 분야에서 전기 부문을 발전시키기 위한 야심찬 프로그램을 채택했다"라며 "탄소 배출량을 지속적으로 줄이고, 2035년까지 '에너지 믹스'에서 재생 에너지 용량을 최대 42%까지 늘리 것"이라고 설명했다.

그는 이어 "이 프로젝트는 기후 변화 과제의 영향을 완화하고 지속가능한 경제 성장을 달성하기 위한 이집트의 비전 2030 및 국가 기후 전략 2050과 일치한다"라며 "이집트 국가와 사우디아라비아 형제 왕국 간의 역사적 관계의 연장이며 양국 간의 결실 있고 건설적인 협력의 유대를 반영한다"고 덧붙이며, 끝으로  "우리는 이집트가 국내 소비와 수출을 위한 재생 에너지를 생산하는 데 필요한 능력을 가지고 있다는 것을 보여줄 것으로 예상한다"고 말했다.

이번 협약은 이 프로젝트를 위해 도심인 소하그 서쪽 약 3천㎢의 땅을 할당한다. 이 풍력 프로젝트는 연간 약 5만 기가와트시의 청정 에너지를 생성해 약 1천100만 가구에 전기를 공급하고 매년 2천550만 톤의 탄소 배출량의 영향을 완화할 것으로 예상된다.

10GW 풍력 발전소는 최대 12만 개의 일자리를 창출하는 것 외에도 연간 천연 가스 비로 미화 65억 달러를 이집트 경제에 제공할 것으로 예상된다. 건설 단계에서 직접 고용은 4만5천 명, 간접 고용은 약 7만5천 명으로 추산되며, 완공 후 운영 및 유지 관리 단계에서 약 2천500개의 일자리가 추가된다.

ACWA 파워는 벤반(Benban)의 120MW 태양광 PV 프로젝트, 콤 옴보(Kom Ombo)의 200MW 태양광 PV 시설 및 1.1GW 수에즈 풍력 에너지(Suez Wind Energy) 프로젝트를 포함해 이집트에 운영 혹은 건설 중이거나 고급 개발 중인 세 개의 다른 시설을 보유하고 있다. 이 회사는 2015년부터 이집트에 진출했다.

ACWA POWER GRANTED LAND FOR 10 GW WIND PROJECT IN EGYPT

ACWA Power and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to allocate land outside Sohag, Egypt for a 10 GW wind project

Agreement is the next step the project’s development following an MoU between ACWA Power, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and NREA in November 2022

Wind farm is expected to be one of the largest in the region

ACWA Power, a Saudi-listed company and the world's largest private water desalination company, the first mover into green hydrogen, and a leader in energy transition, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) to allocate land for a 10 GW wind project in Egypt.

The agreement was signed at the headquarters of the Council of Ministers in the new city of El Alamein, between Dr. Mohamed El Khayat, Chairman of NREA, and Eng. Hassan Amin, Country Director – Egypt, ACWA Power. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the H.E. Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt; H.E. Dr. Mohamed Shaker, the Egyptian Minister of Electricity; Mr. Mazyad bin Muhammad Al-Huwaishan, Consul General of Saudi Arabia in Alexandria, Eng. Sabah Mashaly, Chairman of EETC; and Marco Arcelli, CEO, ACWA Power. This MoU marks the next step in the development of this large-scale renewable energy facility.

Egypt has adopted an ambitious programme to advance the electricity sector in various fields, which includes maximising the utilisation of new and renewable energy resources, encouraging investment in these fields to enable energy independence from fossil fuels, continuing to reduce carbon emissions, and increasing renewable energy capacity in the energy mix up to 42% by 2035. This focus also aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the National Climate Strategy 2050 with a view to mitigating the impact of climate change challenges and achieving sustainable economic growth. This project is also an extension of the historical relations between the Egyptian state and the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reflects the bonds of fruitful and constructive cooperation between the two countries. We foresee that the positive contributions with financing institutions and development partners, as well as the comparative advantages of Egypt in terms of the availability of land, will show that Egypt has what it takes to produce renewable energy for domestic consumption and export.

The MoU allocates approximately 3,000 square kilometres of land west of Sohag, an urban centre, for the project. The wind project is expected to generate around 50 thousand gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually, providing electricity to around 11 million households and mitigating the impact of 25.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

The 10 GW wind power plant is expected to provide the Egyptian economy with US$6.5 billion savings in annual natural gas costs, in addition to creating up to 120,000 job opportunities; in direct employment in the construction phase is estimated at 45,000 people, and around 75 thousand people indirectly, in addition to adding about 2,500 jobs for the operation and maintenance phase after the completion.

ACWA Power has three other facilities in Egypt, that are either in operation, under construction or in advanced development, including a 120 MW solar PV project in Benban, a 200 MW solar PV facility in Kom Ombo, and the 1.1 GW Suez Wind Energy project. The company has had a presence in Egypt since 2015.
