[미국] 태양열을 이용하여 자동차에 전원을 공급하는 친환경 간이차고
비엠더블유(BMW)는 미국 로스앤젤레스에서 새로운 i8 하이브리드 자동차의 출시와 함께 아이솔라(iSolar)라고 불리는 간이 차고(carport)를 비공식적으로 공개하였다. 아이솔라(iSolar)는 i8 하이브리드 자동차뿐만 아니라 현재의 모든 i3 전기자동차를 위한 간이 차고로, 가혹한 햇빛에 대한 가리개 역할을 제공할 뿐만 아니라, 이 자동차들의 배터리를 충전하기 위한 전기를 제공할 것이다. 아이솔라((iSolar)는 비엠더블유(BMW) 계열회사인 디자인웍스 유에스에이(DesignworksUSA)에 의하여 설계 및 개발되었다.
지붕에 태양광 전지를 갖춘 간이 차고는 특히 남부 캘리포니아(southern California)와 같이 햇볕이 잘 드는 지역에 거주하는 자동차 소유자들에게 두 가지 문제를 해결한다. 이러한 지역에서는 얼음, 진눈깨비, 눈 등과 같은 날씨로부터 차량을 보호할 필요가 거의 없다.
대신에 주택 건설업자들은 본질적으로 벽이 없는 차고인 간이 차고(carport)를 제공한다. 간이 차고는 단순히 지붕을 지지하는 지지 기둥을 가진다. 간이 차고는 차량이 주차되었을 때 차량 내부를 가열하고 차량 외부 도색을 바래게 하는 햇볕을 차단하기 때문에 중요하다. 이러한 차량 내부 가열이나 차량 도색 페이드(fade) 현상은 햇살이 밝게 비치는 날이 많은 캘리포니아(California) 주, 플로리다(Florida) 주, 애리조나(Arizona) 주와 같은 곳에서는 중요한 문제이다.
아이솔라(iSolar)는 단순히 이러한 간이 차고의 역할만 하는 것이 아니라, 주차된 차량의 배터리를 충전하도록 지붕에 설치된 태양열 집열기(solar collector)를 갖추고 있다.
그러나 이것이 이 이야기의 끝이 아니다. 비엠더블유(BMW)는 좀 더 환경친화적으로 만들기 위한 임무의 일환으로 간이 차고를 만드는 것이 지구 온난화에 기여하지 않도록 확실하게 하는 데에까지 나아갔다. 즉, 지지 구조가 대나무로 만들어졌다. 더불어 비엠더블유(BMW)는 최대 30년까지 오래 견딜 수 있어 좀 더 지구 친화적인 글래스 온 글래스(glass-on-glass) 방식의 태양 전지판을 사용하였다. 이 방식의 태양 전지판은 실제로 유럽에서 30년 보증이 실행되고 있다.
태양 전지판에서 발생된 전기는 측면에 설치된 배전반으로 흘러간다. 이 배전반은 예를 들어 발생된 전기가 차량 충전을 위하여 노즐 부착물을 가진 전기 케이블로 흐르도록 전기의 흐름을 관리할 뿐만 아니라, 그 사용현황을 알려주고, 자동차 배터리가 완전히 충전되었을 때 그 여유 전력을 가정으로 전송하도록 한다.
더불어 이 모든 것이 충분하지 않다면, 아이솔라(iSolar) 간이 차고는 약간은 곤충을 닮은 형상을 갖추어 시각적인 호소력을 제공하고 있다. 그리하여 이 간이 차고는 거의 확실하게 관심을 끌게 될 것이다. 그러나 불행하게도 지금 당장으로서는 비엠더블유(BMW)가 아이솔라(iSolar)를 실제로 판매용으로 출시할지, 만약 출시한다면 그 가격이 얼마나 될지 불분명하다.

BMW unveils eco-friendly iSolar carport that supplies power to its car
BMW has announced that in conjunction with the introduction of its new i8 hybrid vehicle in Los Angeles, the company will also unveil what is unofficially being called the iSolar carport. A housing for the i8 (and current all electric i3) that in addition to providing cover from harsh sunlight, will also provide electricity to charge the vehicles batteries. The carport was designed and developed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA.
A carport with solar cells on top solves two problems for car owners, particularly those that live in sunny locales such as southern California. In such places, home garages are rare, as there is very little need for protecting vehicles from weather such as ice, sleet or snow. Instead, homebuilders have added carports, which are essentially garages without walls. Instead, they simply have support beams.
Carports are important because they keep sunlight (and hail) off the car while it's parked—sunlight not only heats the interior, but also causes paint to fade, a major problem in places like California, Florida and Arizona which have a lot of sunny days. The iSolar is just such a carport, but it comes with something else—solar collectors on the roof that serve to charge the battery of the car its protecting.
But that's not the end of the story—as part of its mission to become more eco-friendly, BMW has gone to great lengths to ensure that creating the carport doesn't contribute to global warming—its support structure is made out of bamboo. Also, the company has used glass-on-glass solar panels which are more earth friendly because they last up to 30 years—such panels in Europe actually come with a guarantee.
Electricity from the solar panels is directed to a wallbox that not only manages the flow of electricity, i.e. directing it to a hose with a nozzle attachment, but shows usage and allows for routing power to the house when the car's battery is fully charged. If all that isn't enough, the carport is also visually appealing, with a slight resemblance to an insect, the iSolar would almost assuredly draw attention. Unfortunately, it's not clear just yet if BMW will actually make the carport available for sale, and if they do, how much they might charge for it.
