[미국] 자일럼, 물시설 탄소 배출 저감 신기술 시험 지원

글로벌 물 기술 리더인 자일럼(Xylem)은 물 시설이 유망한 신기술을 개발할 수 있는 혁신적인 새 자금 조달 메커니즘을 후원한다고 발표했다. 물 컨설팅 회사인 아일 유틸리티(Isle Utilities)와의 파트너십은 '시험 저수지(Trial Reservoir)'라고 하는 획기적인 물 기술에 대한 자금 지원 및 확장에 대한 새로운 접근 방식이다. 이는 물 시스템의 탄소 배출을 줄이는 기술에 초기 초점을 두고 물 기술 혁신가에게 파일럿 프로젝트를 위한 자본에 대한 접근을 제공한다. 기술 시험 및 파일럿은 일반적으로 본격적인 구현에 앞서 필요하다.

시험 저수지는 초기 단계의 기술 회사에 자금을 제공하여 상수도 시설과 함께 시험 배치를 수행할 수 있는 능력을 제공한다. 자금 저장소는 시험이 전체 배치로 옮겨갈 때 상업 계약의 수익금에서 보충될 것이다. 자일럼은 다른 선도적인 물 분야 파트너들과 함께 이 이니셔티브의 재단 후원자이다.

자일럼 혁신 실험실(Xylem Innovation Labs)의 책임자인 시반 자미르(Sivan Zamir)는 “물 관리에 대한 혁신과 새로운 접근 방식은 도시와 지역 사회가 증가하는 물 문제를 해결하고 탄소 발자국을 줄이는 데 필수적입니다. “이 기금은 획기적인 혁신을 전개하고 확장하는 데 있어 가장 큰 장벽 중 하나인 평가판 비용을 누가 부담하느냐를 낮추는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 펀드 자체가 중요한 혁신이다. 지역 사회의 물 문제를 해결할 수 있는 새로운 기술을 시도하는 경제적 위험을 낮추는 자금 조달에 대한 새로운 접근 방식”이라고 말했다.

아일 그룹(Isle Group) 회장인 피어스 클락(Piers Clark) 박사는 “자일럼의 시험용 저수지 후원은 단순히 수도 시설 혁신을 위한 재정적 역량을 창출하는 것 이상을 수행한다"면서 “시험용 저수지는 유틸리티, 투자자, 신생 기업, 비영리 단체 등 신기술을 시장에 출시하는 데 필요한 모든 참여자를 모았다. 재정적 불확실성을 제거함으로써 유틸리티와 혁신가 간의 파트너십은 지역 사회의 물 문제를 해결하고 시장에서 입증된 새로운 물 기술을 얻는 데 집중할 수 있다”고 말했다.

시험용 저수지는 전 세계 기술 공급업체에 개방되어 있으며 고, 중, 저소득 국가의 시험을 적극적으로 지원합니다. 유일한 요구 사항은 테스트 중인 기술이 수도 시스템의 탄소 발자국을 줄이는 데 도움이 되어야 한다는 것이다. 이는 도시 유틸리티 또는 산업용·상업용 물 사용자다.

시험용 저수지는 2022년 1분기에 첫 번째 유틸리티 파일럿 자금을 지원할 예정입니다.

New Funding Source for Trials of New Technologies That Reduce Carbon Emissions

Global water technology leader, Xylem, today announced it is sponsoring an innovative new funding mechanism for water utilities to deploy promising new technologies. The partnership with water consultancy Isle Utilities is a new approach to funding and scaling breakthrough water technologies, called the “Trial Reservoir.” It provides water technology innovators access to capital for pilot projects, with an initial focus on technologies that reduce the carbon emissions of water systems. Technology trials and pilots are generally required in advance of full-scale implementations.

The Trial Reservoir will make a pool of funding available to early-stage technology companies, giving them the capacity to undertake trial deployments with water utilities. The ‘reservoir’ of funding will be replenished from the proceeds of commercial contracts, when the trials move to full deployments. Xylem is a foundation sponsor of the initiative along with other leading water sector partners.

“Innovation and new approaches to water management will be essential for cities and communities to solve their increasing water challenges and decrease their carbon footprint,” said Sivan Zamir, head of Xylem Innovation Labs. “This fund will help lower one of the biggest barriers to deploying and scaling breakthrough innovations: the question of who pays for the trial. The fund, itself, is an important innovation. It’s a new approach to financing that lowers the economic risk of trying new technologies that can solve communities’ water challenges.”

“Xylem’s sponsorship of the Trial Reservoir does much more than just create financial capacity for innovation in water utilities,” said Dr Piers Clark, Chairman of the Isle Group. “The Trial Reservoir brings together all the players needed to bring new technologies to market – utilities, investors, start-ups, non-profits. By removing financial uncertainty, partnerships between utilities and innovators can focus on solving a community’s water challenges and getting new water technologies proven in the marketplace.”

The Trial Reservoir is open to technology vendors around the world, actively supporting trials in high, medium and low-income countries. The only requirement is that the technology being tested must help reduce the carbon footprint of the water system, be that a municipal utility or an industrial/commercial water user.

The Trial Reservoir expects to fund its first utility pilots in the first quarter of 2022.
